Laird
History
Lairds were once more numerous and ruled smaller clans. A single island could hold multiple lairds, each representing their own clan. Each laird would choose their own successor. Though not restricted to a bloodline, the surname of the preceding laird would be passed to their successor.
Following the Splitting Seas Civil War, the title of "laird" lost much of its cultural context. Islands that hosted multiple clans had a singular clan chosen by the Monarch to be the ruling clan, with the rest dissolved and absorbed. As such, much of the history of the clans have been lost and overshadowed by what are now the equivalents to dukes/duchesses.
