Kingdom of Isarus
Structure
At present day, the monarch remains the head of the government. The monarch has final say in all legislative and military affairs. However, the monarch answers to a council of elected officials, representative of the major cities of Isarus and their surrounding territories.
The noble houses manage their territories and answer to the monarch to exercise their will. They are referred to as lords and ladies.
History
Isarus was formerly named Vestil and was ruled by a halfling family. The exact details of the transition have been lost to history. What is known is expected: it was a result of political conflict at the beginning of the current age.
The former halfling rule was overthrown by an elven family, the Isarus line. At a point along that line, the elven heir wedded a human, making their next heir a half elf. This trend continued with a push for the line to remain relatively "true," along with encouragement for rulers with shorter lifespans, so that one ruler would not remain in power potentially for centuries. The elven line continued to thin with human blood, and today the elven ancestry is only faintly visible.
All of the major cities of Vestil were renamed, with a few noble families allowed to retain their power in exchange for loyalty to the new monarchy. Those that were replaced were often replaced by elven lords, allied with the Isarus family However, over time the citizens of Isarus grew frustrated with the conditions of living and rebelled against the nobility. Since then, the power of the noble houses have been significantly reduced in favor of the current system.
