Green Mushtree

Also known as the green furcate toadstool.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Pileus (cap): Measures 3 - 4 metres tall and 7 - 11 metres wide. Umbonate or membranous, with a smooth, laccate surface. The cap margin is usually even, though it may be split if a branch of the same specimen has grown too close to the parent cap. Green in colour, ranging from emerald to shamrock.
Lamellae (gills): Adnate, distant gills. Basil green. Produces a moss green spore print.
Stipe (stem): Fibrous texture. Measures 7 - 15 metres tall, 1 metre across at the stumped base, and 1 metre across where it connects to the cap. Cream white in colour.
Veil and Annulus: Superior pendant partial veil.
Hyphae and mycelia: In the immediate vicinity of mushtree, the hyphae are rhizoidal and range in colour from moss green to emerald green to fern green. Further away from the mushtree, these colours fade.

Growth Rate & Stages

Green mushtrees grow at a rate of about 70cm a year, taking 20 years to reach their full height. They can live for up to 45 years, after which they shrivel and decay and are eventually reabsorbed into the earth. However, their mycelium networks can survive indefinitely, as long as there are sufficient nutrients available.
