Aelora Valcoran

Praxithe Serenity

Aelora Valcoran, the wife of her eldest brother, Taeron Valcoran. Her younger sister, Saenna, is also married to Taeron. They have had only one child reach adulthood, Rhaelyra Valcoran | 19. Aelora is a dragonrider and rides the dragon Abraxas.

Appearance and Character

As with all of the Valcoran children, Aelora has classical Valyrian traits: Long, silver-gold hair and purple eyes. Her features are sharp and square, mostly equal width between forehead, cheekbones and jaw. Some consider her a more harsh beauty than her sister, with a stern, serious and somewhat unforgiving nature.

Aelora is a dragonrider and trained warrior, however she prefers silk over steel. Possessed of adequate swordsmanship, Aelora would rather use her brother as a blunt instrument of her will than the impossibly sharp Valyrian steel short sword that sits atop her mantle.

Early Life

Born in 4812 AD, the eldest daughter of Baeran and Daenaera Valcoran, by thirty minutes, Aelora’s birth was followed by the surprise arrival of her twin. The beginning of her life started how the rest of it would be shaped. In the womb of their mother, Aelora deprived her twin of their mothers blood and stunted its growth. When it did come into the light of the world, it was small, stunned and weak. No manner of stimulation could rouse the tiny babe to cry while Aelora belted with healthy lungs and ensured to all present that she at least would survive the night. Aennyra, also survived the night, and then, surprisingly, a full turn of the moon, then another and finally after a year had passed, it was believed she would survive infancy after all.

Youth

It was no surprise though that while Aelora proved to be lively, quick-witted, and adventurous, that her twin was anxious, withdrawn and if you ask Aelora, simple. They were never close, Aennyra preferred the company of her boisterous older brother, Taeron and Aelora preferred the company of the Valcoran family curators who tended to their drakes. Aennyra on the other hand was frightened of dragons. She screamed when they got too close and cried when they roared. Aelora laughed no matter how stern a look she’d receive from her mother. She wasn’t laughing however when she entered the chamber where the drakes were kept and found Aennyra receiving tutelage from one of the curators. There was only one drake that was approaching the age to be bound, and when twins are born into a family, it is not uncommon for them to compete to some degree for its attention.   Try as she might to convince herself that there was no way the gods would be so cruel as to allow for her sister to become a dragonrider before she did, her mother made that task impossible when she pulled Aelora aside and spoke of the need for patience and perseverance in the face of disappointment. Aelora saw this as a sign that her mother was supporting Aennyra and coaching her toward successful bonding over what was rightfully Aelora’s. Further proof of this, or so she believed, was overhearing her mother speak of how miraculous it would be if Aennyra could overcome her fear and ride a dragon.

A Tragic Death

There would be no miracle for Aennyra. The morning of a preordained bonding ritual, a moon after the twins had reached the age of twelve, two body servants came screaming out of her bedchambers. Guards stormed in and they attacked whatever it was that had sent the servants running in fear.   The house guards tried to keep Daenaera from entering once the danger seemed to have been subdued, and witnessing what lay within, but they could not hold her for long. Inside, lying in the middle of her bed was the burnt, bitten and blackened body of Aennyra and the hacked corpses of half a dozen small firewyrms.   The family went into mourning and the bonding ritual was delayed for two full moons. The investigation that followed the death of Aennyra gave the family no answers. Drake firewyrms are not capable of boring into the dragonstone that the Valcoran domus was constructed of, and even as adults they very rarely make it as high as their location. They had obviously been planted and no one had ever admitted to having done such a heinous thing to such an innocent child.

Aelora bonds with Abraxas

What was known was that there would be no competing interest for the attempt to bond with Abraxas. With a bright smile and a daring heart she approached the dragon after offering it a plump goat for its meal and clawed up its flank while it still swallowed the charred meat and gave it not a moment before she commanded Abraxas into the sky. As was often part of the ritual, Aelora spent the night on Abraxas’ back circling the Valyrian Peninsula and only returned at sunset the following evening. This was considered a success and an extravagant celebration feast was held in the Valcoran domus as another dragonrider swelled their ranks and their power.
