Squabbling monsters Myth in 13 | World Anvil

Squabbling monsters

This halfling myth, like many myths thorughout the world, explains the existence of storms in the sea, and the wicked large waves that occur as a result.   According to this myth, storms in the sea often form because, whether in the material plane or in the intersection of their own planes, air mephits are fighting water mephits.   The intensity of the storm is what indicates whether mephits are fighting in their own planes or in the material plane. When the fights occur in the material plane, the storms become spectacularly big. Terribly dangerous too.
When I was young, I once saw an air mephit drowning in water. I didn't know what it was, of course.   But your grandpa has always been resourceful, and I figured it may be some sort of spirit. And if I saved it, who knows... maybe it would give me a grand reward!   So I row towards the creature, who is agitating these wispy arms around, making a total ruccus, and when I give it a paddle to hold onto it.... my boat goes down!   So now, me and the creature were both drowning! A water mephit was fighting this other creature, and I became forever its enemy.   I was lucky to escape alive, but I have never been able to go back at sea. Every time I even get close to the sea, I can feel the waves stirring, eager to drown me once and for all.

Seed of Truth

It is common knowledge that the different elemental mephits do not see eye to eye with each other. What is not known is why do these creatures fight so much. Many believe "fighting" to be simply in a mephit's nature.   Most people do not realize most mephit personalities are specific to their elemental type (because most people have never met a mephit in real life). If they did, they would immediately understand why these different elements have so many issues with each other. What they represent, and their personalities attached to those meanings are intrinsically opposed to that of other elements.
Must be those wicked mephits! Damn spirits fight more than my children.
