Air Mephit Species in 13 | World Anvil

Air Mephit

One of the main inhabitants of the Plane of Air, and probably, the most populous intelligent creature of the plane.

Creation

The gods created the mephits to bind and somewhat limit the eternal energy that was created and released on the elemental planes. Each god created at least one mephit, but often a few, according to what they associated with the specific plane.   For the air mephits, it was Gozreh and Monad who mostly oversaw the creation of air mephits. Sarenrae also chose to create and shape some mephits to the qualities she saw embodied air.

Characteristics

Air mephits are likely to have two main kinds of personalities:
  • Whimsical and prone to distraction (Gozreh)
  • Skittish and mischievous (Monad)
  • Less common, but also prevalent is the following personality:
  • Gentle but with a penchant for surprises (Sarenrae)
  • Perception

On the material plane, air mephits are believed to be connected with bad omens.   Their presence is seen as a warning of bad things to come, whether from stronger elemental creatures or forces, or from their own hand.

In their own plane, air mephits rule over several of the sparse floating cities and settlements present in this plane.   However, at their core, many mephits are natural-born nomads, flying with the wind, letting their currents take them (or fighting against them in a maniacal race). As they travel, mephits meet each other, spend some time together, and then, simply drift apart. Many following this lifestyle do not form long-term bonds.

It is these same travels and air currents that more than once blow air mephits through an unexpected rift and landed them in the Material Plane.   Many of them hurry to return, as the winds of the Material Plane are incomparable to those of the Plane of Air. Some, however, are tempted by their new surroundings and decide to stay on this new plane.
