Geureuk Settlement in 13 | World Anvil

Geureuk

The library of scents, as seen by an enterprising and paranoid wizard

There's nothing, nothing, more powerful in the plane of air than knowing a creature's scent.

History

Ancient

There are thousands of stories about how the library of scents was created. None are true, of course, as truths in the plane of air are as lasting as an unprotected flame.   What records exist in other planes begin once the settlement of Geureuk had already spawned around the library. It stands to reason that the library emerged first, thus, no record of the beginnings of the library exist.   We do know that the tribe of mercanes who trade not in magic items but in scents are the oldest inhabitants of Geureuk.

Recent

More recent history is full of stories of planar adventurers fool enough to offer their scents to enter the library of scents. What's worse, some of the fools didn't even have a reason to visit or enter the library, they did so out of pure curiosity! I have no patience of sympathy for them. Those that sold their scents thinking they were on a critical mission to save their kin, plane, god, etc.... those I can at least pity.   I studied countless records of these adventurers, plus the odd academical account before ever setting foot in the Plane of Air.

Inhabitants

Geureuk is manned mostly by invisible stalkers, who also take on leading roles in the upkeep of the modest settlement that surrounds the ever-shifting library.   Air mephita are constantly trying to hold onto power, but they are usually unsuccessful in their schemes.   Meanwhile, the mercane clan that purveys in scents has little need to scheme or vie for power. If they wanted to, they would control both Geureuk and the Library of Scents. That has been my impression, at least. They are the one faction I made an effort to befriend, and having successfully done this, I have now hold a permanent tent in their camp, in exchange for a ready supply of scents that I get sent by my apprentice back home.
