Want the quick guide? The Quick Video Guide covers how to version your Manuscript.

Manuscripts is World Anvil's novel-writing software. You can use it to write, edit, and even publish your stories with a seamless integration with your world. If you'd like to version your Manuscript, you can follow the process below:

Make a new folder for your chapters

To version your Manuscript, start by creating a new folder (Draft 1) for your chapters.

  1. To make a new folder click on the green small downward arrow right next to the green plus button on the top left, and select Folder.
  2. On the right under Title, you can write a name for that new folder (e.g. Draft 1).
  3. Position your chapters underneath that folder by dragging them slightly inwards, to put them inside the folder.
  4. To ckeck if your chapters are inside the desired folder, click on the plus button in front of the folder title to colapse/reveal its contents.
  5. You now have the chapters of your Manuscript all inside a single folder (Draft 1).

Make a copy of that folder - Version 2

You now want to make a copy of that folder (Draft 2) for the new version of your Manuscript. This copy will become the second version of your work, where you can keep writing and editing your story while keeping that initial version saved as your Draft 1.

  1. On the top left, click the title of your Manuscript that has a book icon before it.
  2. Select Review mode at the top right of your screen.
  3. You will be able to see all of your chapters listed in the middle of the page. To create your new folder (Draft 2), click on the green +Create a new Folder button at the bottom of your listed chapters.
  4. You can write a name for that new folder (e.g. Draft 2) directly on it.
  5. When that new folder (Draft 2) is created, click on it to select it on the left panel.
  6. Again, click the +Create a new Folder button to make new copies of the chapters you have in the first folder (Draft 1).
  7. You can also title them directly to match your chapters.

You now want to copy the scenes that you have in your chapters, and place them inside the chapters in your second folder (Draft 2).

  1. Click on the scene you want to copy.
  2. Click on the gear icon on the right panel.
  3. Click Duplicate to make a copy.
  4. The copy of that scene will appear directly above the original scene, with the name ''[title of the scene] copy''.
  5. Drag and position the copied scene underneath and inside the correct chapter in the second folder (Draft 2).
  6. Repeat the same process for the rest of your scenes.

You now have a second version of your Manuscript.
