Session 2 Journal

by Aerendyl Shadowglen

Ah, what a glorious adventure today was! From the moment we set out in search of that filthy, squatter-infested castle, I knew this would be a day to remember. The sweet scent of profit hanging in the air was too enticing to resist. We came across a demon statue, pointing to the entrance of a large dungeon, ominously named "The Mouth of Chaos". The prospect of hidden treasures and chaos had my blood boiling with excitement, but we decided not to take that detour for now. But oh, the joy it will bring me to plunge into that chaos someday! We soon encountered a group of pathetic goblins, prattling on about their miserable lives and their mistress, Jedra. As I silently stalked them, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at their poverty. What use was stealing from those who had nothing? They were a waste of my time, and so I convinced the others to let them pass.

Then came the swarm of insect bats. We smoked them out of their cave in order to gain access to it. The battle was fierce and swift, with Kreg nearly succumbing under their onslaught. But ahh, the exhilarating thrill of battle! Watching Ungrot smash those creatures to pieces was a sight to behold. I must admit, it’s good to have him around in a fight. One of the foul creatures attached itself to me, but Ungrot dispatched it, and freed me from its grip. After the dust settled, we found a cache of coins and a gem, as well as a Wand of Magic Missiles! It was a shame we couldn't carry it all, but I managed to pocket as much gold as I could. Our journey through the secret cave was uneventful, but it led us to another secret door and a spectacular view atop the castle. The sight of those towers and battlements filled me with anticipation… this castle would be a fine base of operations, but first we’ll have to clear it. And what treasures could the squatters be hiding? We found one tower teeming with goblins, but we left them be, for now, securing a door to keep them contained. In another tower we found yet more goblins. The mage put them all to sleep, and in short order I made sure they’d never wake. There's something satisfying about ending their pitiful lives before they even know what hit them. We discovered a trap door leading to a suspiciously web-filled canoe. Given the choice between facing a potential giant spider or leaving it alone, I opted for the latter. I’m not afraid, of course. It simply didn’t seem worth the effort. Although I must admit I’m curious about the canoe, which is out of place. We looped around to the first tower of goblins and the mage attempted to put them to sleep like the other group, but the spell failed and alerted them. Thanks to our earlier precautions of blocking the door, they couldn't alert the rest of the castle. After a brief interrogation of one, I put a swift end to his misery. We learned about Gorbez the smithy, but little else of value.

We then descended to the next level, where we found Jedra performing some sort of demonic ritual. But thanks to my impeccable skills and silent entry, we managed to catch her off guard. Kreeg's burning hands spell, Ungrot’s powerful blow, and Broggnarl’s precise strike all contributed to her downfall. It was a glorious ambush, and I reveled in the thrill of it. We found a chest containing gold and a silver necklace, as well as a book. The book, Maybeth’s journal, hinted at a "wealth of the healers" and something about a "mouth of doom" and a "sunken graveyard". Intriguing, to say the least. The real treasure, however, was in the chest's hidden compartment: two gold bars, each worth 200 gp. Ah, the sweet smell of gold. It's moments like these that make all the danger and dirt worth it. This day’s adventure will be one for the bards to sing about.
