The Star Egg

by Naazim Al-Zahir

I joined a group of companions in a quest to help an eccentric old man. He says that a star had fallen from the sky the night before and he wished for us to find it and collect the "star metal" for him.

After confirming the direction that this star fell, we began to travel south by south west for two days, making camp at night. As we came closer to our destination, we began to notice some strange things. The forest was quiet, and animal tracks could be seen running away from the area we were heading. A strange laugh could be heard like that of a child, echoing through the trees. We attempted to discover the source of the sound but to no avail. We moved onwards.

Finally we arrived at the landing sight. The Star had formed a crater in the ground, and seemingly caused a forest fire that had gone out by the time we arrived. This could be what scarred the animals away. We began to work on breaking up the large rock into more manageable pieces to carry back to camp. As we continued to work we discovered that at the center of the star rock there was a strange red egg, about 2ft tall. We should have destroyed it right then and there but Oculo insisted we try to sell it.

We made camp that night and were set upon by a strange sight. Ghosts or spectral apparitions of some unknown creatures came shambling towards us. They were speaking in a strange tongue that could only be understood by the magic of my companions Lulu and Jor. Apparently they were trying to warn us of the egg and the danger it posed to us, but at the time we did not understand.

The next morning we gathered the star metal using a make shift sled that I crafted and began to head back to Glenhaven. We made excellent time, not realizing the fact that we were unencumbered by our heavy load.

When we arrived back at the main camp we began to realize what had happened. No one acknowledged our existence, and when we tried to physically interact with someone our hands passed right through them. We were trapped in the ethereal plane. After inspecting ourselves we noticed a thin ethereal cord connected to the back of each of our heads that went off in the direction where we found the egg. Our bodies had never left.

Sprinting back to the crater, there was no need to stop and rest as our spirits could not tire. When we arrived we witnessed in horror as the egg we thought we were carrying the entire time was at the center of the crater, now 12ft tall. Our bodies were laying around the base of it covered in a mucus like fluid with a long fleshy cord connecting them to the egg.

Jor attacked the egg with his magic, causing it to crack, at which it hatched into an unspeakable horror. Some spider like being with the face of a human child. It was truly hideous. At this point our spirits were reunited with our bodies. We fought our way out of the mucus pod and set to work on destroying the abomination. It was a difficult fight as the creature was able to dodge our attacks with supernatural agility, but finally I saw an opening and was able to place an arrow between it's haunting black and green eyes. It's skull caved in at the point of impact and it began to implode on itself, leaving behind nothing but a single black orb the size of a coin.

Exhausted and weakened from our encounter, we rested ourselves before heading back to Glenhaven with the star metal we collected. The old man had better pay us well for our trouble.
