Basilisk Hunt

by Naazim Al-Zahir

I gathered a group of companions to hunt down and slay as many basilisks as we could find. Normally a solitary beast, the fact that so many had been spotted in the same territory could only mean there was a nest somewhere near by.

We found a set of tracks by the river up north and followed them southwest for two days. The trail led us to a cave where we found a petrified boar outside, further solidifying we were on the right track.

It was pitch black inside the cave. The only one of our group who could see was the Alfar druid. This was probably for the best as the darkness protected us from the basilisk's petrifying gaze. We found and slayed a mated pair of the beasts as well as discovered four of it's victims and their nest.

The young basilisks were in a pit that they were still to small to climb out of. Rather then kill them and destroy the remaining eggs we agreed it would be more humane to leave them for now in hopes to return and relocate them at a later time.

Further into the cave we found an underground lake with a strange serpent like basilisk living within it. The beast attacked us and turned two of our number to stone with a mucus like secretion that oozed from it's skin.

IMPORTANT: The Druid Roland and I discovered that the stomach acid of a basilisk is able to reverse the petrification process, altho it does cause painful skin irritation.

After killing the serpent we were able to gather enough stomach acid to revive both of our party members as well as the for victims we found in the cave. We discovered another statue under the water but were supposed by the fact that it was a mimic disguised as another victim. Mimics are such crafty creatures.

After making short work of the monster we did find another body floating in the water. This one had not been petrified and seems to have drowned instead. The victims we saved confirmed that the body was one of theirs, a young noble from Gildengard who wished to make a name for himself as an adventure. It seems this life was not cut out for him. The men carried the body home with them to inform his family as we parted ways to return to Glenhaven.
