Human, Lich, Powerful
Lord Xaravelan
Xaravelan was a human male born over 300 years ago, there is little to no information in existence concerning his life before his rise to Lichdom and consolidation of power.
What is known is that approximately 300 years ago, the area that is now known as his empire was a lawless land ruled by several small factions, each seeking power of their own. Bandits, Mummy lords, Liches, Vampires and others each looked to carve their own kingdom from the land. Conflicts between faction occurred often, and usually resulted in the deaths of many innocents. Living within the area was a nightmare, but fleeing was almost impossible. It was during this chaotic time that Xaravelan emerged as a lich, and quickly managed to defeat another lich in the area, absorbing his foes legions into his own.
From here Xaravelan spent several decades building the Ziggurat that would, in modern times, become the heart of the capital city Menas. Once completed, the Ziggurat allowed Xaravelan to spread his power further, darkening the skies and resting control of any undead from their former masters. Soon enough Xaravelan had destroyed, exiled, or bought to heel the chaotic factions of the land and declared the lands to be his to rule.
Initially there was push back from many of the residence within the territory that had now become part of The Xaravellian Empire. Generations of tyrannical rule from monstrous groups, the dangers of necromancy and undead, and much more served as continuing points of conflict between Xaravelan and the locals. But over time these concerns wained.
Eventually the “Death Rites” were enacted, this meant that any and every citizen of the empire could provide “Service in death” in order to improve their quality of life. Financial assistances, housing, land ownership, magical boons, schooling, etc, all where offered in exchange for service in death. The laws for necromantic activity also reflected this, only licensed practitioners of the arts could use necromancy, and even then most where monitored and regulated. With the “Death Rites” and “Laws of Necromancy” in place the empire began to flourish, whether commoner, lord or governmental function, wealth and prosperity boomed within the empire.
Over 100 years ago, the Holy realm decided that the Xaravellian empire was a dark abomination that needed to be stopped, and a great holy crusade was launched, but not a single ship made land fall. The empire unveiled their Whalebone fleet, ships built from the remains of whales and great sea beasts, paired with neighbouring forces from The Commonwealth, the realms invasion was short lived.
