WHO IS YOUR DADDY AND WHAT DOES HE DO?

Matrim was born on the streets of Waterdeep to a human woman and an unknown elf father. This happened 30 years ago. His mothers name was Rose Corvidus. She used to work as a house-maid for the elven merchant Timbral Winterdusk, one of the upperclass merchants in the Castle Ward district of Waterdeep. Much of his money was made through blackmarket trading and less then scrupulous actions. In fact, Timbral is more of a criminal than a merchant, as most of the ruling class in Waterdeep are. At some point in her mid teens, Timbral started forcing Rose to keep his male guests occupied with her talents. For several years, she was forced to entertain many a traveling friend of Timbral's. One of the many elves she slept with got her pregnant with Matrim. When Timbral discovered this, he threw her out on the streets. She was 21 at the time.
 
It was only after several years of raising Matrim that his elven features started to develop so until then she had no idea of who the father really was, and even the revelation of Matrim being a half-elf only narrowed the possibilities to a small number, all of whom were long forgotten. At least this is what she told Matrim when he was old enough to ask after his father.
 
Rose lived in poverty on the streets of the Dock Ward district, often forced to prostitution and begging in while Matrim was feeding on her teat. When he was old enough, Matrim joined in with a gang of street children, learning the ways of pickpocketing and general thievery. He learned how to pick locks, how to sneak up on a victim, how to be silent as a mouse, and other necessary theiving skills. Rose would rely on the income he would bring in from pickpocketing to add to the measly scraps she would receive from her less then savory skills. Eventually they were able to move into a small cottage and she retired while Matrim would bring in all the money. He had to rely on what he made thieving, because no respectable city elves would hire him and the humans of water deep were prejudiced against his kind as well. Rose got ill when Matrim was 25 and slowly degraded over the next year. It wasn't until she was on her deathbed that she revealed to Matrim the truth about how he was created, and the wickedness of Timbral that put her on the streets. When Rose died, Matrim vowed he would seek his vengeance upon the elven merchant.
 
After several more years of honing his skills and learning as much as he could about the layout of Timbral's manor, Matrim decided to make his move when he learned that Timbral was away on a merchants trading journey. He and a band of mercenaries and thieves broke their way through the defenses and robbed the manor blind. Among the things Matrim walked away with were detailed letters outlining the organization of a criminal operation happening in the area of Phandalin. Unfortunately the plans were all written in the Goblin language. Upon leaving he burned the manor to the ground. Matrim and his crew dispersed their new found wealth among the street population of Waterdeep. The beggars and urchins nicknamed Matrim "the Crow" and looked to him as a folk hero.
 
Unfortunately, Matrim never understood the full extent of Timbral's criminal activity. While away, Timbral got the devastating news of the loss of one of his many bases of operation. It was only a minor loss on his part, but it was enough that he couldn't let it go unpunished. Timbral started to use his resources to find this "Crow" and to put him to death for his actions. Matrim's crew was found and slaughtered one by one. Matrim escaped into the country, where he continued to learn the goblin language to decipher the letters he found in Timbrals study. He eventually learned that a man named Glasstaff was running a band of thieves called the Redbrands in Phandalin. Matrim went there to try and learn more information about Timbral and his whereabouts, for he wanted to completely destroy the man. Unfortunately, after infiltrating the Rebrands, he was caught by Glassstaff and put under a spell of persuasion.
