Letter to Hannah

by Tristan Unfridson

To Sigrun Hannah

Word may have already reached your ears, but it is done sister. He is no more. He will torment us no more. He will torment the North no more. He fell before me holding father's sword on with a smile on his lips.

All the time I spent since father's passing wondering what I'd do, how I'd react when I first saw him. It was completely unlike what came to pass. In the end, it was only swords clashing against each other, smashing his shield to pieces and finally by going through his throat. It was father's signature move that took him down. I hope he is proud watching from Valhalla.

I am happy the north is safe, we've reached peace with the orcs, saved the Firbolgs and, for a time at least, we can breath easy and focus our efforts on the things that threat us all, like that dragon in Hvittopp mountains, or these Jotun spreading across our lands. As for avenging father, that left me only with a lingering emptiness. I thought it would bring me some sort answer, some way to justify all the suffering I went through but there were no answers, only void.

Not all is bad though sister, I have some news which I think may please you and mother. I have finally confessed my feelings to Aloise, asked her to be my betrothed, and she accepted. I was always told as a child that a man should not enter a war with words left unsaid, that words and feelings weigh down the sword, and so I did. After the battle, I managed to find one small chest with mother's old ring and offered it to her, she accepted with a smile that would light up the saddest person in these lands, I am continuously humbled by her strength and caring nature. I should have perhaps asked mother first, but I know in my heart that she would approve and I hope you do as well.

My life is one of danger and uncertainty, but I wouldn't want to face any of it without her by my side. The after life is too long of a time to spend in regret and she is too great of a woman for me to hold my feelings for so long.

Next we meet, you'll have to start calling her sister but don't you dare call me Jarl. You are my sister, now and always, and I don't have enough words to spare to say how proud I am of you.

Tell mother that I used what she taught me against Tanra, it was not just me in that ring, it was her, it was you, it was father, it was Tanra himself, it was the Gudrun's Radningar, it was the Jaedyr training. It was that knowledge and training that made me a better, stronger man and if not for all of it, I wouldn't be writing this letter today. It would be foolish of me to stop now and it would be disastrous for the Shieldlands.

Rest assured sister, as long as I draw breath, I will be fighting to save our lands and I hope we can once again fight side by side. I may yet call upon your aid if we travel to Hjalmar's lands to deal with the Jotun.

I love you sister, and tell mother the same words for me please. Tell her my sword will remain sharp.

The major events and journals in Tristan's history, from the beginning to today.

Ser Madra

Today I nearly lost those closest to me, after a giant wave destroyed the boat we traveled upon. After searching the shore desperately for any signs of them, me and Fella managed to reach an encampment where they were being held by Hjarnborn's men. My com...

The Guardian

Barely a day has passed and yet we find ourselves in the eye of a storm whose pieces we barely comprehend. Yesterday we faced off against giants covered in tree bark and dryads who seemed to be transformed in some way. Whatever grace and elegance the tale...

Mielikki

One of the few good memories I have of the traitorous Tanra is from when he trained as a young lad. I remember that in one of the first lessons we had he did nothing other than knock be back on my rear by thrusting his shield against me. It frustrated me,...

He who I can't name

The North remains as harsh as its ever been, the cold bites you down to the bone, regardless of how many furs you lay upon them and the animals are just as ferocious as the weather, if not more. The cold dulls the senses, lulls them into death and the onl...

Foolish boy

Last time I visited Hyrind the first drops of snow and the bone biting winds of the winter had started to dance through its darkened walls. The faces that looked upon me as I struggled to hold back tears were as winter itself had lodged itself in their ey...

The Weight of it All

I hardly remember what happened once I stepped into that ring. But the faces, the corpses that littered the streets I ran through as a child, the struggles of my companions, of Fella and his kin, of Arjak's kin and of Gudrun, I felt those upon me. I tried...
