Personal history
Lux Invicta was born in a Church of Ilmater, to a member of the Sisterhood of Suffering. An aasimar, his birth was an exceptional event, and a symbol of Ilmater’s grace. Raised amongst the order for a time, at thirteen he was sent to the Soldiery of Suffering, the paladin order associated with Ilmater. Trained and taught by the Soldiery’s paladins and priests, he grew up never doubting his purpose. In casting, swordplay and devotion he proved himself threefold, and there was little doubt of his success. At eighteen he was sent to the Grand Church to finish the spiritual side of his training. On the day of his Oath of Devotion, he prepared to step onto the platform to be recognized. But when he did so, the light did not shine upon him, and the words of his oath stuck in his throat. At that moment, the great doors at the far end of the chamber opened, and through it came a knight. His armor was worn and battered, and the blade he carried was bent and pitted with rust. The clergy stood silent as the stranger approached the dais. He stopped and faced the priest saying, “High Cleric, we have made our decision. And the Watchers have chosen him.” No law could stand against the Watcher’s right to choose their successor, and Lux was taken, the deal sealed the moment the light did not shine. He was trained further by the knight, and taught the creed of the Watchers, who’s pragmatism outweighed their zeal. Years later, Lux was recognized as a Watcher himself. The self righteousness taught by the church was gone, leaving behind only what was needed. He changed his name from the pompous one granted by the church and took the simpler and more apt name, “Arken” which means, “To watch”. He spoke his oath and, without fanfare, began the Path. Aasimar are symbols. They embody the nearest that mortals can get to perfection. Often, aasimar paladins can be the greatest mortal servants a god has, standing as a bulwark against evil. And thus, they become the target of those who would stand against light. To protect himself and those around him, Arken travels masked or in his armor, keeping his true nature hidden, all the while remaining watchful for corruption.
Education
A more formal priestly education was had at the church of Ilmater. But his true learning came later from his mentor and the knight that laid claim to him, Bergan Elhorn of the Western Watch. Bergan stripped away the self righteous pomposity taught by the church's other paladins, and trained him in the pragmatism of the Watchers.
Employment
He is affiliated with the Order of the Gauntlet, though only loosely. The Watchers lie almost completely independent of the Gauntlet, but are allied in their goals. He belongs to a loose coalition of Watchers in the North of Faerûn.
Accomplishments & Achievements
The banishment and slaying of countless harmful extraplanar beings. Much of his duty lies in lesser devils and demons, but has fought aberrations and several harmful fey that could not be convinced to return to their homes. Perhaps most notably, he is known for the slaying of a Chasme that mortally wounded a fellow Watcher. It was this action that earned him his badge. Recently, he aided in the destruction of an ancient dracolich named Dargothauth, personally destroying the creature's phylactery. In it's hoard was the Axe of the Dwarven Lords which he helped deliver to King Bruenor of Gauntlgrym. For this he was named Dwarf Friend, and given the title Arken Lichbane.
Morality & Philosophy
Arken believes powerfully in the tenets typically reserved for Redeemers, paladins devoted to the redemption of wicked people and beings and for nonviolence. He will grant any being a chance to leave peacefully, or abandon their evil. Devoted yet pragmatic, Arken is no fool. He knows that undead, demons, devils, and other supernatural threats can be inherently evil. Against such foes, he will bring his full wrath to bear. Yet still he hopes that one day, even creatures of wickedness will invite their own redemption.
