Personal history
Born small, weak, and suffering from a spinal defect, Clara was a heavy burden on her modest family. Her only gift was a keen intellect, and thus her family decided that she'd be better off trying for the Academae in her home city of Korvosa - rather unilaterally.
Clara wasn't able to make the cut as a wizard and instead was hired as one of the assistants to the Head Arcanist Stefan Florescu to pay for her cost of living, finding some much-needed stability. The relationship was very one-sided; Clara had everything to lose and the Head Arcanist leveraged that to pressure her into secretly becoming the test subject of increasingly more dangerous experiments.
She tried to covertly ask for help from others in the academy, but her words fell on deaf ears belonging to people who wouldn't entertain the idea of causing a 'scandal' involving the Head Arcanist. Forlorn, she resigned herself to her situation and continued to play the assistant lab rat while studying some arcane books in her free time.
One day, a remarkable artifact was delivered to the Academae: it was an ancient Thassilonian core of unclear purpose that seemed to stimulate and amplify magic. Head Arcanist Stefan became fixated on this object and put himself and Clara working around the clock to create a device to house and harness the core's power. He wanted to study its ability to strengthen someone's inner magic and, for that, Clara would have to wear it.
After being pressured into undertaking his riskiest test yet, Clara underwent magic-assisted surgery to install their invention into herself. The result was overwhelming success. Not only had she survived the installation, but the device and the core that it housed were irreversibly fused to her body and replaced her defective spine, healing her of many pains.
But this result was never what the Head Arcanist intended. Desperate to recover the Thassilonian core, he restrained Clara and was ready to vivisect her to get it back; unbeknownst to them both, the core's power already flowed through her blood, awakening and amplifying her innate magic potential, and her distress led to an explosive awakening.
Finding herself amidst smoke and burning papers, Clara could think of nothing but to flee. Flee from the Head Arcanist without even checking if he survived; flee from the Academae which had ignored her cries and rejected her pleas; flee from the city where every set of eyes that glanced at her said the same thing: 'poor thing. So weak, so helpless, so worthless.'.
She who had known nothing but frailty now found herself filled with power: magic that she could control as easily as she formed a thought. It was an addicting sensation - one that she fully leaned into, allowing it to bolster her ego and confidence. No more cowering and no more lowering her head - Clara would seize this chance and shine as brightly as she could, warming others with her glow rather than hoard it to herself. She would nourish her newfound strength and show the world that she was more than a cripple. She would thrive, not just in spite of her hardships, but to spite them.
Education
Clara has considerable self-taught arcane knowledge but it's all purely theoretical. She's also learned a few other languages to be able to perform translations.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Although the implant on her back was originally designed by the Head Arcanist, she poured an immense amount of time and effort into its creation - enough that she's able to repair it herself and considers herself to be its 'main inventor'.
Failures & Embarrassments
Commenting on Clara's height quickly irritates her.
Her self-taught knowledge of the Arcane was downplayed for many years, thus it has become a sensitive point to her.
Mental Trauma
Due to her experience waking up to her own vivisection, Clara struggles to sleep soundly near people she doesn't trust and occasionally has nightmares related to this.
Intellectual Characteristics
Clara has a large ego and has a short temper. She won't handle being talked-down to well. She can be quite reckless at times.
Though she's a perfectionist and trusts herself first and foremost, she's quite eager to empower and bolster others.
She can be quite protective of those she takes a liking to.
Curious almost to a fault.
Hates feeling overlooked.
She describes her newfound link to magic as a 'sixth sense', or having to learn to use a new limb.
Morality & Philosophy
She does not believe that 'absolute power corrupts', nor views power for the sake of power a bad thing - to her, it only comes down to how it is used.
Clara has aversion to people that refuse to help/share with others, especially when doing so would be inexpensive to them. She particularly dislike knowledge-hoarders.
