Prose - Flight of the Rat Queen

by Miz

Miz the rat downed her seventh pint of halfling beer and slammed it back down to the table, only to find the human across from her slumped down, head laying in the puddle still dribbling out of his sixth. She jumped to stand on her chair, quickly reaching across the table to scoop up his wager before it would be sticky enough to reconsider, then hopped to the floor and quietly left her opponent and her tab behind.

Ducking to a side street, she sat on a dusty crate and opened the coin purse to make sure she hadn't been swindled - fifteen gold, just as wagered. She wasn't sure she'd ever seen so much gold at once, let alone held it. Miz smiled to herself and dumped the contents into her own purse before she tossed the tallman's aside and hopped up to her hooves. She turned to leave, and found her path blocked.

Two people were at the entrance to her alley, one leaning against the wall of the bar and another watching her. Humans, from the look of it, though Miz couldn't be sure in the soft light of the quarter moon above. "Lookie here, Paul. She finally noticed us," the standing one said, prompting the leaning one to look her way.

"Greedy bitch was too invested in counting her steal to hear us," Paul said. "Hey. You cheated our friend, and we're here to get back what's his." He stood up straight next to his friend and pulled a switchblade from his pocket. "Don't make us make this ugly, freak."

Miz looked between the two of them, and kept her eyes focused their way as her left hand reached down to her hip. The two men tensed as she brushed her cloak aside, then visibly relaxed as she brought a half-mask in the shape of a skull up to her face and fastened it. "Sirs," she said, raising her voice, "you have the honor of addressing Mizeri, the Rat Queen. The wager was simple - I drank seven, your 'friend' not only five. His coin is mine. If you know what's best for you-"

"Liar," said Paul's friend. "You ain't even four feet tall, how're we supposed to believe you could put away four drinks like that?" He took a step closer. "I says you're a liar. And a cheater." He pointed at her, "those horns ain't even real, are they, freak?"

"No, no, Jazz," Paul chimed in mockingly, "I'm sure they're plenty real. Little demonspawn bitch can't make an honest living looking like that, can she? I bet they love you over at the Underbridge. Tell ya what, freak. I'll let ya keep the coins if you work your magic on me."

Miz's amber eyes shone bright behind her mask, and she laughed. "Paul, yeah?" she called over to him, and looked him up and down. "I'll have to pass. You don't look like you could please any woman, let alone someone as experienced as me." She winked to him, and orange ambers began to dance in the air around her. "Jog on."

Paul flicked open his switchblade and charged her, his angry swipe going wide. Miz ducked past him, then twisted to plant her hoof against the back of his knee - it connected, and his momentum carried him to the ground where his knife clattered to the floor and bounced out of reach. She started to run toward Jasmine, who planted himself low with his arms wide. "You've got nowhere to run!" he shouted, and Miz smirked. The embers dancing around her glowed hot, and with a burst of flame she slid past him faster than he could react to stop her, her hooves and paws drawing dust trails from the dirt road as she briefly came to a stop, then sped off down the street with a delighted cackle. Jasmine looked after her, and hesitated for a moment before he turned back to check on Paul rather than give chase.

Miz sprinted for several blocks before looking behind to check if she'd lost the men, then laughed and leaned against a wall to catch her breath. It was late, and few people still walked the street who didn't live there. She took stock of her surroundings, and realized she was a good ten minutes from home. The embers continued to accompany her as she walked the dark streets toward home - even if they did not provide much light, they helped her cut an imposing figure and would hopefully make any would-be mugger think twice.

She thought about the two men who'd attacked her, Paul and Jasmine. They claimed to be friends of the guy she'd drunk under the table, but they hadn't actually used his name. She didn't recognize them, either, and thinking back realized they'd had some sort of accent from a place she couldn't even guess as to where from. Putting those together, Miz reasoned they'd likely been sailors stopping by in Magnimar who thought they could make a quick coin off someone who wouldn't fight back. Hopefully, that meant they wouldn't know her, either, or think to complain to Jaijarko. The last thing she needed was that scumbag knowing she had gold coins to clink together. And just in case he did hear…

Still several blocks from her home, Miz hoisted herself up some scaffolding and the embers around her died down, leaving her in near total darkness. She found herself in a small hidey-hole above what passed as a market street in Rag's End, small enough that it was almost never occupied when she needed it. Getting herself as comfortable as she could against the hard wood, Miz took off her mask and pulled her cloak over herself, pulling just enough from her inner fire to keep her warm through the night before drifting off to sleep.

Morning greeted her gently, pale sun straining to reach her through autumn clouds and the musty planks around her. She listened to the light din of business below her as she woke up, then carefully crawled out of her sleeping spot and dropped down to the street. She stood, stretched, and straightened her clothes, before joining the small crowd of shoppers. Out at the docks, Miz drew a lot of eyes for her appearance - even in a city as large and well-traveled as Magnimar, an ysoki was a rare sight, let alone one with cambion blood like herself. Here at home though, here in Rag's End, she was old news. Just another one of the unfortunate souls trapped here without much opportunity to leave.

She wandered over to a fruit stall, standing on the box that had been set in front of it for shorter patrons like herself, and waited. The Halfling girl who ran the stall was grabbing new stock for the counter, and soon turned around to greet her. "Miz! What a surprise. What brings you here this early?"

Miz leaned forward onto the stall, grinning up to the clerk. "Oh, y'know. Was out late earning my keep. Figured I'd stop by on my way home."

The clerk giggled. "You? Must've been a fine gentleman to appease your standards. I bet he gave you a nice, juicy tip, didn't he?"

"Oh, you wouldn't believe me if I told you!" Miz smirked, then leaned in to give the halfling clerk a gentle peck on her lips. "Morning, Sam. I was out late drinking, and managed to get some money off the guy. Some idiots tried to shake me down for it after, but I gave them the slip."

Sam laughed, smiling. "Good girl. Better with us than them. Anyone we know? I hope you stayed out of trouble this time."

Miz shook her head, and thought back to what she'd concluded before sleeping. "I didn't recognize them, I think they were sailors. Didn't seem to know who I was, but it was kind of a lot of money. That's why I stayed the night here, just in case. Actually, I have a pretty big favor to ask of you." Miz looked over her shoulder, then hopped off the box and slipped behind the stall where she opened her coin purse to show Sam how much she'd won.

Sam's eyes went wide, and she stared at Miz. "What are you gonna do with it? What if...?"

Miz nodded. "I know. I'm going to play this safe, just in case. If he did tell Jaijarko... Well, I'm not going to go by home, just in case it's being watched. Could you tell my family that I'm going to skip town for a bit? I know, it's a big ask, and I'm sorry-"

Sam cut her off with a hug, which was quickly returned. "I understand, Miz. I've always known... I mean, look at you. The Mouse Queen Mizeri has always been bound for greatness. I've known you since we were both little, and it's time for you to spread those wings of yours for a bit." She started to pull away, and Miz opened her mouth to say something but Sam cut her off with another kiss, soft and delicate. "I know you'll be back. Listen, there's a little town about three days east of here, Sandpoint. My family's from there. There's some big festival happening there soon, maybe you can take a little vacation and enjoy yourself for a change." She hugged Miz again, giving the rat a kiss between the ears.

Miz held herself there, the warmth of her inner fire dwarfed by what she felt whenever she held Sam like this. The fur around her eyes felt wet, and she squeezed Sam all the tighter before pulling away. "I think you're right. Who knows, maybe I could even cut it as an adventurer, I'm getting pretty good with my fire. I'll send you a message when I can and keep you updated, alright?" Sam nodded. Miz fished for her coin purse and pulled out one of the gold coins, slipping it into Sam's palm. "For you, and them. Stay safe, please. I love you." She gave Sam another kiss, then ducked into the alley behind her stall.

Miz would sneak her way to the Seacleft, the massive cliff that separated the two halves of her home city, and find a way to the top of it. If she was going to strike out on her own, she'd need supplies. Get ready world, here comes Mizeri.
