The Twin Lanterns

by Tseren Mua'Nia

[Dated three weeks prior to joining the Stewards.]

Great news! On a routine cataloguing job for the Guild, I almost died! ...That's not the good part, the GOOD part is that I DIDN'T die, because I stumbled upon a strange chapel... Right, details! Details!

We were up in Rimeshard, and for the most part it was a standard dig. Until on day 4, where I managed to get separated from the group. In a VERY hostile environment. Not ten minutes later, the ice underneath me completely gave way, and I found myself sealed inside! LITERALLY sealed, as though the ice had frozen behind me in mere seconds. Like I said, near-death experience! (Not that I'm a stranger to those, exactly...)

But! Just as I was beginning to wonder if fire magic could keep me from freezing to death in an endless icy waste, I came upon a chapel of some kind. Beautifully made, well preserved, and eerily empty. Why the emptiness was eerie, I couldn't say-- I should HOPE it was empty, having been under the ice this long. Deeper inside were two iron lanterns on wooden crooks, one glowing orange and one glowing blue. It was as if they'd been lit this whole time...

Something about them told me to reach out and take one, so naturally I obliged. The crook of the orange lantern felt right in my hand, but as I contemplated this, the other lantern vanished with the words: "The twins are now freed". Ominous stuff! I have to wonder if someone else out there was in a similar pickle to mine, who found a blue lantern that fit their hand just right.

Now I was slowly freezing at the time, so I figured I'd better not stick around too long. However, I did note a symbol marking the chapel: A pair of four-pointed stars, one on top of the other, with streams emanating from them at either side (to form a sort of S shape). Something to look into later. Something I CAN look into later, thanks to my newfound lantern lighting the way out of the icy crevice and back to the rest of the Guild! No harm, no foul, and now I have my very own oddity to research. I'll keep this "Twin's Lantern" with me as much as I can-- it seems useful for channeling my magic, and I may find its twin yet. Mysteries upon mysteries!

The Twin Lanterns, from a recent trip to the Rimeshard! I must keep an eye out for the blue-light lantern...
