Full of honeyed words and generous favors, the kindness of Lord Calcite Mendax is well known within the Stewards Court. Despite his eclectic arcane interests and penchant for machinery, The Lord of Fort Metallicus has become a modest celebrity among the aristocracy. To the common folk of Reboun however, the Magnate of Jewels is much maligned for his aberrant persona and unorthodox rule. Either away at Court or hidden behind the wretched gates of Fort Metallics, the absent Lord Mendax casts his shadow on Reboun in the form of a miscreant merchant class. Risen from the depths of an unsavory black market, the smugglers and swindlers cornering the Gem trade are a product of an ugly transition of power between Mendax and the Gnomish Guild. The feud between Mendax and his fellow Gnomes can be traced back to Reboun's most recent rebellion. It was in the aftermath of this conflict that many holdings were wrested from the Gnomish Guild and turned over to the newly-made Lord. There are many whispers and yarns about how this came to be, but the popular consensus is that the regalia of house Mendax was bought at the price of his brothers life.
