Personal history
Riv is a marijinn—and air and water genie—hailing from the Whimsey. Riv was deeply unsettled, as most of his kind were, by the severing of the Mortal Phase from the Whimsey a couple of centuries prior. At the time, Riv hadn't paid much attention to the ravings of the genie known as Sterntin, but the sudden deactivation of all known portals to and from the material plane and the disappearance of Sterntin and many other genies who had been on the other side of the Voidphase was too great a mystery to ignore.
In the aftermath, Riv began listening to the teachings of the GIT. Riv found their explanation for the secondary status of genies in the Whimsey—a realm that had once belonged exclusively to their kind—rather compelling. The Fey, invasive species corrupted over hundreds of cycles into frivolous, power-hungry beings, had relegated genies into secondary players in their insufferable political games. And Riv believed the GIT were the right group to make a change back to a better era for the Whimsey.
Shortly after his induction into GIT, Riv happened upon a curious denizen of the Whimsey. This individual—one of Miss Aeden's little pets—was unlike any other fey Riv had ever met. Her name was Olivia Vahlen and she fascinated Riv. He fabricated a reason to journey with her and soon learned that she was not fey at all but a displaced human, a young woman from the material plane! Riv couldn't be sure, but he theorized that if Olivia had been able to cross the Voidphase in her short lifespan, her crossing had occurred since the portals had closed which meant travel between phases was still possible—somehow.
Riv convinced Olivia he was trying to escape some courtly troubles and promised to help Olivia with her quest to return back to her home realm. Together they encountered a shadowy figure in the Gloamwood who offered them a chance to move through the Voidphase and emerge on the other side. This creature, who identified itself only as Lekhsinkka, was certain the destination was Olivia's home. It's circular logic made communication and clarity nearly impossible, but that was not enough to dissuade Riv and Olivia. They agreed to allow themselves to be transported.
As Lekhsinkka's magic wove around him, Riv felt that some part of the spell was focused on Olivia. Riv tried to back out at the last minute, having become fond of Olivia but also viewing her as a valuable part of his plan to rediscover a route to Iotoros and determine what exactly had happened to Sterntin and empower the GIT to continue Sterntin's good work. But he was too late. When he awoke, Riv knew immediately the spell had worked. He felt different, the very air and earth around him felt strange and foreign. While he was still adjusting, Riv heard an agonized wail. He was surprised to find he was accompanied by a youngling, one who bore a passing resemblance to the assured woman he had journeyed with, almost as if it were Olivia's daughter or younger sister. After some initial shock and disbelief, Riv understood that something about the passage Lekhsinkka had opened had altered Olivia in some fundamental way. She was still herself, but her body had been aged in reverse.
Riv allowed Olivia the time she needed to adjust to her new circumstances and silently promised to look after her as best he could in this strange new realm. He accompanied her on several failed journeys as she attempted to locate her human family. But as it became clear that some time had passed in Feodris and many of the things Olivia strained to recall about her childhood were not particularly helpful in navigating the complex social scenarios they found themselves in. They did manage to find a lead after months of searching that sent them to a small island nation-state known as Grasmere. Once there, Riv and Olivia gambled on a last-ditch effort to find what may have happened to Olivia's family but the trail ran cold.
Meanwhile, Riv was able to do some research and discovered to his great surprise that there were no records of Sterntin anywhere he looked or inquired. Riv was fascinated by The Collapse and made a note to investigate it more but more pressing matters rose up: they had spent all their resources on finding Olivia's family and were now stuck in Grasmere with nowhere to go and no way to get there if they did. Riv happened across a pair of help wanted notices which claimed to be looking for a "multifaceted cook" and an "unexpected barmaid." Riv had become interested in the humanoid custom of cooking and Olivia claimed he was a natural. But if "multifaceted" didn't describe Riv, nothing did, and he found Olivia to be very unexpected at almost every turn.
They responded to the ad and after a very unconventional interview they found themselves reporting for work at a dumpy old tavern in a rough part of town called The Stewed Prune. There they met an odd assortment of gentlemen toiling to get the place ready for business and dove in head first to help however they could. The tavern opened just a few sunsets ago and business had started slow but Riv was optimistic that it was steadily improving each set. Riv estimated that if they could work for just a season or two, they could save up enough to book passage to somewhere with the most complete historical records available and he would find what had happened to Sterntin, figure out a way to get back to the Whimsey, and make himself invaluable to GIT.
