Personal history
Bromduhr Mountainbane hails from the cold north of Nuglodihr West. Bromduhr, or Brom to his friends, is the son of Belmir and Redlynn Mountainbane. He is the youngest of four siblings, all brothers (Barhaen, Rikgren, and Rarson), and his parents are respected members of the Shapers' Guild in Mag Gelduun.
From the age of 10 Brom was keenly interested in the world outside his family home. His oldest brother, Barhaen, broke tradition and chose not to join the Shapers' Guild, instead becoming a member of the Skyedge Watchers ranger's guild. Barhaen brought Brom on many expeditions outside Mag Gelduun's walls, teaching him to survive on the land and feeding is fascination with nature.
His uncles began teaching him the family recipe for Mountainbane Stout, and he was brewing it and experimenting with new recipes by the age of 15. It was through his passion for brewing that Brom first met Piriya Carjor, an evisten girl who worked as a barmaid and brewer's assistant—though she managed most of the work without supervision—in her father's brewhall.
Though Piriya was older than Brom, they forged a quick friendship and Piriya shared Brom's love of the outdoors, revealing herself to have druidic tendencies and helping to bring out Brom's druid side as well.
For most of his youth, Brom didn't think much about politics or the ruling Tower Kingdom. He accepted the authority of the Pillarguard and the bureaucracy of the Pillarhand casually but they had little influence over his life until, all at once, they mattered very much.
Brom and Piriya had a mostly platonic relationship, though Brom sometimes wondered if there might be something more to it some day. But Piriya's parents found their relationship troublesome and made no bones about their distaste for the young duo's outdoors expeditions and closeness. At one point Piriya began acting differently, seeming tired and strained but uncharacteristically reluctant to talk about it with Brom. Hours before they were set to take an annual camping trip for Brom's naming-sunset (birthday), Brom pressed Piriya too hard about her secrets and Piriya lashed out. She left the city walls alone, and Brom sulked for a few hours before deciding to apologize and went to find her.
Instead, he found Piriya's half-set up campsite, signs of a struggle, and his friend was missing. He searched frantically for her, but only found a Pillarguard patrol—deep in the wilderness where they had no business being—disheveled and arguing among themselves. Brom returned to the camp and found a page from a journal he hadn't known Piriya was keeping. It mentioned by name the Adjudant (high ranking, magic-using commander of the Mag Gelduun Pillarguard), Yusirra Kegmail.
Brom went back to the Keep where he witnessed a clandestine meeting between Adjudant Kegmail and Piriya's parents. Kegmail seemed to be turning over a notebook of some kind. Then, though she had been missing for less than a day, Piriya's parents began lamenting their lost daughter and publicly blaming Brom for seducing her and causing her disappearance. Brom tried to turn to the Town Patrol for impartiality, but quickly found they were either involved or complicit. With his own family seeming to turn on him under pressure from the Carjors, and no one else to turn to, Brom fled Mag Gelduun.
He wandered south for a long time, stewing on the injustice of his treatment by the clearly corrupt Pillarguard, Patrol, and Carjor family.
During a stint in Osoroy, Brom met up with a young tabaxi named Bold who shared his animosity toward the Pillarguard (despite Bold's membership in the 'Guard at the time) and his penchant for fine ale. They made a good team, though Bold had a bad habit of sticking his nose in whenever he found Unafs being mistreated. After some time, Bold came to Brom asking for help developing a scheme to disappear from the Pillarguard. Brom helped him and though the plan did not go exactly according to the way it was drawn up, Bold was able to fake his death and the pair fled.
They found their way to Bezokh after some time where they found a tortle and a harengon in intense duress at the hands of some prejudicial Tower race thugs. Bold couldn't help stepping in and Brom backed up his friend. The grateful Unafs (Quincy and Beeroy) accepted Brom and Bold's aid, but the four of them continued to encounter a streak of bad luck and narrowly escaped the city limits with their lives. They found a temporary hideout and tried to decide where they could go until the heat died down.
While in hiding, a curious message arrived specifically meant for Brom. Though unnerved at how someone could have found him, Brom read the message with growing excitement. It was from an old family friend named Kroth. Kroth had been a friend of his parents', and though she had moved away when Brom was young, he remembered his brothers speaking of her fondly as one of the best ale brewers they'd ever had the privilege to train under.
Kroth's letter described how she had settled down in the shipping depot of Grasmere, a human Keep on the eastern edge of the eponymous Grasmere Island. Kroth said she'd been running a successful tavern there but was getting ready to retire and wondered if Brom was interested in taking over as proprietor. Brom saw this as a chance to start over, far from the troubles of Mag Gelduun, and the western Spire.
They arrived in Grasmere and followed Kroth's letter's directions to... The Stewed Prune. The place was a dump but the roof didn't leak (much) so they worked to fix it up and re-opened for business a couple of nights ago.
