Brian of Tarth - Summary
(Human • Paladin of Bahamut • Noble • Lawful Good)
Brian of Tarth was born into privilege in the Upper City of Baldur’s Gate, where aristocrats lived behind high walls and higher expectations. His family—politically influential, wealthy, and relentlessly ambitious—raised him not with affection but with purpose. His parents, both busy politicians, left most of his upbringing to his paternal grandmother, a wise and formidable matriarch who shaped his early sense of duty and honor.
Brian was the fifth of seven children. The two eldest - heirs to the family’s legacy - died in a tragic accident when a sudden storm caused a landslide that crushed the family carriage. Brian survived only because he had stayed behind that day. The loss shattered the family. His parents became paranoid and controlling, tightening their grip on the remaining children until the household felt more like a gilded cage than a home.
His education was broad, strict, and designed to mold him into a future statesman. Tutors drilled him in history, etiquette, diplomacy, and the languages of dwarves and giants. He excelled, but the life laid out for him felt suffocating. Brian longed for something real- something meaningful beyond politics and privilege.
In his youth he began sneaking into taverns to escape the monotony of aristocratic life. In the smoky chaos of Baldur’s Gate’s lower districts, he felt alive. In 1467 DR he met Lindor, a clever 15-year-old street urchin with a talent for trouble. When Lindor crossed dangerous people, Brian used his wit and charisma to talk them out of it. The two became inseparable and went on all kinds of adventures together.
Years after his sibling's accident, while traveling far from home, Brian, now 22 years old, encountered a Paladin performing miraculous healings—feats Brian had believed impossible. The realization struck him like a divine hammer: If he had possessed such power earlier, he might have saved his siblings. That moment became the turning point of his life. He sought purpose, redemption, and a way to ensure no one else suffered as he had. His path led him to the Oath of Devotion, swearing himself to Bahamut, god of justice, honor, and protection. Brian’s voice—deep, calm, and composed—became a tool of reassurance and leadership. His demeanor remained friendly, charismatic, and approachable, even as he held himself to impossibly high standards.
But Brian still made time to go on adventures with his friend Lindor. During one of these adventures, in 1476 DR Lindor fell into a trap and shattered his leg. Desperate, Brian bought a healing spell scroll from a shady witch‑doctor. The spell worked - too well. Lindor’s body dissolved and reformed into something undead. Horrified and unable to destroy his friend, Brian carried him to a crypt where Lindor still “lives,” a secret Brian has never confessed to anyone.
Brian’s noble upbringing taught him the dangers of blind trust in both governments and churches. He believes in duty, but not obedience; in justice, but not bureaucracy. He helps strangers without hesitation, treating all with kindness and respect. Yet the ghosts of his siblings—literal or imagined—could break him in an instant.
Brian is currently thirty‑five years old. He was born in 1446 DR- He relaxes by visiting taverns - not necessarily to drink, but to observe the drunken chaos and remember the life that shaped him. He has no rivals, gets along with nearly everyone, and carries himself with the steady warmth of someone who has seen darkness and chosen to be a light against it.
Despite his devotion to his oath, recent corruption among the city guard and aristocracy of Neverwinter shook his resolve. Seeking clarity, he learned of Dragon’s Rest, a remote cloister dedicated to Bahamut. Drawn by instinct and faith, he set out on a rejuvenating pilgrimage to contemplate his place in the world and renew his purpose.
