97: Shuffling

by Lady Leticia Scarlet-Bloesembhel Voetdhel-Montaneus

Missives were pouring in.

Scarlet stood with the home team in her office, half a dozen maps spread out before them. Figurines marked various points of interest as she coordinated their efforts. Ciel sat to her right, reading over the latest weather reports. With the upheaval in the climate, extra planning was required, but they had trained for this. All of them had.

Scarlet was grateful for the impromptu mobile office drills they'd done in the past. Everything she had learned was now being put to use. Naturally, unforeseen events and last-minute complications still cropped up, but that was to be expected. The important thing was that she could assess a situation and, with the right information, make sound decisions for her people.

She let Ciel handle the stack of reports while she combed through the books. Moving money would be tricky, too many eyes were watching, but it was manageable, so long as she remained cautious. She greenlit the funds. At least they wouldn't have to worry about the budget...yet.

Scarlet crossed over to Ciel, who handed her a summary compiled by her team. She read it quickly, then sighed. “More rain? This is going to make land operations crawl.”

Turning to another teammate, she asked, “How many airships do we have free?”

The man placed a few new pieces on the maps. There wasn’t a convenient ship to pull; no matter what, she’d have to reshuffle personnel. Reviewing both the current dispatch and the upcoming schedules, she began the delicate task of maneuvering her teams to ensure continued coverage.

Ciel glanced over and murmured, “That doesn’t look good, boss.”

Scarlet nodded grimly. “Yeah. If we get more than five setbacks, multiple plans are going to fall apart.”

After a pause, she pointed to one of the maps. “We’ll send some by sea. I’d rather avoid overland routes, but we don’t have a choice. Better to be slower than cause a domino effect and have everything unravel.”

She stepped back and called over her shoulder, “Someone let Porter know he’ll have to go in leaner than expected, but give him the good news: he’s got triple the budget and can use it however he sees fit!”

Scarlet scratched a few numbers down and sighed. This dispatch was going to be more expensive than she had originally budgeted for. It wouldn’t hurt her pocketbook, but it did sting her pride. She was usually spot-on when predicting a project’s needs. The erratic weather had thrown most of her models out the window, and she was thoroughly peeved.
