Welcome to Dunwall?
Sunday September 29th
After an awfully long night, one would expect to be a bit more tired than I currently was. Somehow after speaking with the wise bush monster, I found myself refreshed and ready for adventure.
We traveled for only a few hours down an eerily simple path, we stood at a clearing overlooking another valley, one we did not recognize. Down in the valley, there was The Keep and a small town.
We decided to check out the town first. About 2 hours later we finally made some headway to the town when we came across an old man. He told us that we were in the town of Murrayfield, in Dunwall, which is supposedly South of Boval Valley. We were warned to not venture to The Keep, or we would become a part of the woods.
He also told us about the previous tenants of the castle, the Knights of Leocar (the night that the god-king, emperor was killed by the magicians, the Kings Guard failed to protect the emperor. The Knights of Leocar were born from the ashes of the Kings Guard, after the commander of the King’s Guard, Leocar.
It was getting dark. We were pointed to the Windmill, the tavern/inn in the center of town. When we arrived in town Danor pointed out some dark shadows he saw flying back towards The Keep. Only Danor saw it, so it very well could have been the cheese going to his head again.
This town was barely a town. Six buildings which surrounded a well in the town center. The Windmill was by far the largest building in the town. Attached to the Windmill were a blacksmith and a tailor shop. We entered the Windmill. There were about 2 dozen people inside, but they were all seemingly locals. The place is even a bar below the standards of Boval – the service was okay, but the “floats” here were not pleasing, even for Danor.
The barkeep brought us our ales and when we acquired about a room, she told us she would be sending over Oliver Goodheart. Oliver was a bit weird, even for a local in this backwards town. I could not put my finger on it. As we started discussing our sleeping arrangements, he called in his boys who snatched Oak up and knocked him unconscious. We were told that there are two books inside The Keep. If we bring them both back to Oliver, Oak’s debt would be paid. One of the books is a ledger of the family of clergy who served the church, the other was an ancient prayer book related to the Knights of Leocar. We agreed to help in exchange for Oak’s life and his debt paid.
Monday September 30th
We woke up the following morning and made way towards The Keep. We found ourselves wandering in the woods. We seemed to be making no gains or progress towards The Keep. Every path seemed to lead us further away from our goal. We decided to take a break to get our bearings. Danor gave me his father’s book and I made out a something about death. My interpretation was that we must face death in these woods before we can gain entry to The Keep.
In the middle of the night, we were ambushed by 10 or so undead, rotting corpses. Molnos would bless us this night. My crescent moon pendant started glowing and it sent out radiant light that sent the rotting sacks of flesh running away. A few of them lingered behind, daring to continue their already lost battle against the might of Molnos. Of course, it was not much of a problem for Danor, Rast, and I.
I had the final rotting corpse in front of me, after it had already risen from what we thought was its final blow. I stuck my hand out, teasing the ghoul with my fingers in front of its mouth. The Zombie attempted to bite my hand, just as I had planned. As the undead attempted to bite down on my hand, I snapped my finger and the radiant flame exploded the top half of the zombies head off, clean into the sky. As the zombie’s head popped like a grape, I heard … no I sensed one word, “Mom”.
I searched the corpse of the corpse laying at my feet. I trembled at the thought that this rotting corpse could be her. Half of the reason why I came to this blasted valley in the first place. I noticed a barely held together scroll case on the corpses belt loop. Inside was a scroll, written to my mother from my father. It is barely held together, and it is too risky to try and read here in the woods, with the fear that it would crumble in my hands. But this confirmed my suspicion that this corpse was my mother. Now I am riddled with questions. Why was she here? Where is my father? Was he one of the zombies I scared off earlier? I spent the night burying my mother’s corpse, giving her proper burial, but not before I collected one of her fingers in a cloth. Maybe I can bring her back somehow? I recall reading about a spell that requires lots of practice, skill, and expensive materials.
After the night is over, we went onwards to The Keep. Danor was jumping out in front of us and lead the way, he was overly excited. When we get to the courtyard, Danor pulled out his sword and told us it is pulling him towards the center of The Keep. We arrived to see a set of rusted armor sitting in a throne, in a grand dining hall. Danor approached it and the armor reacted as the armor began to fill out – the Protector of the Keep is awake.
Rast and I spread out around the dining hall to get into flanking positions around the hall. We were jumped and attacked by two large, stone, gorillas with wings. Danor was engaged, well more like fixated on combat with the Protector of the Keep. Rast and I were able to handle the stone monstrosities, however, when we turned around, nearly exhausted from our victory, Danor laid unconscious in the middle of the floor, with the Protector of the Keep, no where to be found.
