This story is told by

Supporting Cast
  • Lord of Oaksleigh Arthur Swiftwind
Wealthy, educated, and a seasoned explorer, Arthur Swiftwind has spent his life pursuing his interests with the full support of his family's vast fortune. Now that Arthur's father has died, he is the head of his family and is seeking the assistance of trusted friends in order to accomplish one of his most lofty goals- compiling a chronicle of the adventures of a mercenary company as they explore the rapidly expanding and evolving world around them. With his considerable resources, Arthur employs his pals as a private mercenary company and tasks them with sending documentation of their travels back to him to be edited into his book.
  • Chef Carlo Montegue
Suave and charming, Carlo Montegue is the Swiftwind family's live-in chef and personally prepares most of the family's meals, or otherwise instructs the maid staff on the preparation of the food. Carlo arrived several years ago from Ardia and seems to enjoy living a fairly anonymous life at Swiftwind Manor. More often than not, Carlo has Mildred instruct one of her maids to go into town and do the grocery shopping for him, leaving Carlo free to spend his off hours roaming the gardens or reading in the library.
  • Crispin Fowler
Fair, quiet, and acquiescent by nature, Crispin Fowler is a young man who was taken in by the late Lord Victor Swiftwind when he was no more than a toddler. Raised in the shadows of Arthur Swiftwind and his siblings, Crispin exhibited a green thumb and an eye for design from a young age and gradually became the household's gardener, earning a living wage building magnificent flower boxes and climbing vine arrangements throughout the manor's grounds. Crispin is shy and naive but would give the very shirt off his back to the people he cares about.
  • Former Lady of Oaksleigh Edna Swiftwind
Edna Swiftwind was the mother of Margaret, Arthur, Edward, and Elspeth. Remembered by her older children as gentle but stern and ever-watchful, Edna died giving birth to Elspeth, and her husband Victor was never quite the same thereafter. In her absence, her eldest daughter became fiercely independent, her eldest son became a wildly cavalier adventurer, her younger son gradually found his way into scandal after scandal, and young Elspeth was to grow up outspoken, vibrant, and willfully...if only to break the terrible silence of her own misplaced guilt. Ironically, Elspeth, with her pale, freckled skin and red hair, is the spitting image of Edna, and this similarity caused Victor to spoil the girl.
  • Edward Swiftwind
Frequently sneering or glaring from the corner of a room, Edward Swiftwind is the younger brother and lifelong rival of Arthur and has made quite a reputation for himself as a womanizer and scoundrel. Edward did not attend Victor's funeral, and openly resents his father's choice to leave the estate solely in the hands of his older brother. Edward gets by on the Swiftwind name alone and is known for burning through his monthly stipend too quickly and having to ask for money from his siblings.
  • Elspeth Swiftwind
Elspeth Swiftwind, the outgoing younger sister of Arthur Swiftwind, stands out at her family's lavish social engagements, fair, freckled skin and flaming red hair turning heads even when she is not dripping in jewels. Witty, daring, and flirtatious, Elspeth is one of the most desired young women in Oaksleigh, and her dowry is sure to be the sort of sum only whispered about in polite company. Elspeth has taken the death of her father, Victor, particularly hard, and has begun finding it difficult to leave her family's ancestral property.
  • Margaret Swiftwind
Arthur Swiftwind's elder sister, Margaret, is a philanthropist and socialite and is known for never having taken a husband, choosing instead to invest her personal wealth wisely and throw numerous charity balls and salons throughout the year. Margaret is perhaps handling the death of her father better than her siblings are, and she has little patience for Arthur's tendencies toward flippancy and debauchery. Margaret does not have much faith in Arthur's idea of founding and funding a mercenary company, but she hopes that the project will keep her brother busy and help him manage his grief.
  • Mildred Honeydew
The polite and occasionally stern head maid of Lannora Ivy, who has worked for the Swiftwind family for three generations. She takes great pride in managing the manor's housekeeping staff, and can be overzealous in her instruction of them. Mildred is somewhat disapproving of Arthur's adventurous nature and is excited to see him settling down and taking his place as master of the house.
  • Baron of Blue Hills Theodore Morgenstern
Stately, distinguished, and a little stuffy, Baron Theodore Morgenstern of Blue Hills is an oil and steel tycoon whose fortunes exploded when he was a young man, allowing him to amass quite a bit of wealth and start a large family over the last few decades. The kind and radiant Tomasina is the youngest daughter of Baron Morgenstern, and most of polite society considers the match between the wealthy baron's daughter and the old money of the Swiftwind family to be a wise one. Arthur Swiftwind very much loves Theodore's daughter, though the two men do not care for each other much.
  • Tomasina Morgenstern
Tomasina Morgenstern, most often called "Missy", is the delicate and sheltered daughter of a powerful industrial tycoon. She is betrothed to explorer and socialite Arthur Swiftwood, and wil thereby become Lady Swiftwood of Oaksleigh. She dotes upon her love with abandon and seems thrilled to move into Swiftwood Manor and begin her life with him.
  • Former Lord of Oaksleigh Victor Swiftwind
Now deceased, Victor Swiftwind was an explorer and hunter who became a ruthless investor and businessman. This allowed him to build onto his family's already sizeable fortune to an incredible extent but also sapped away his ability to care for and appreciate his family. Victor died just days before Arthur returned to Lannora Ivy, having always believed that his eldest son was alive and would find his way back one day.
  • Groundskeeper Wendall Spivey
Tall, bony, and occasionally squirrely, Wendall Spivey is the caretaker of Lannora Ivy, and lives in a small cabin on the manor's grounds. He is known for bullying the maids when he thinks he can get away with it, and has a contentious relationship with the head housekeeper, Mildred. Mr. Spivey is polite and submissive to Arthur, but does not necessarily respect his employer; since both Wendall's father and grandfather had worked as caretakers of Lannora Ivy, Spivey views the mansion and its grounds as a place belonging as much to him as it does to the Swiftwinds.

Session Zero: Welcome to Lannora Ivy

Summoned by your friend and former adventuring buddy, Arthur Swiftwind, you arrive at Arthur's ancestral home. The sprawling estate spans many acres and contains beautiful grounds, lush gardens, a family cemetery, its own stables, kennel, and garage, and at its center stands the opulent, gothic mansion of Lannora Ivy. More casually known as Swiftwind Manor, Lannora Ivy was recently willed to Arthur along with the rest of his late father's estate. Your daring and good-spirited friend is settling down to a life among the aristocracy from which he came as Lord Arthur Swiftwind of Oaksleigh, and it is now that he has contacted you for assistance. The correspondence that was delivered directly into your hand via courier was written in beautiful calligraphy and sealed with rich violet wax stamped with a seal in the shape of the Swiftwind coat of arms- a swift soaring up toward the sun, its wings and tailfeathers trailed by seven stars, and crossed beneath the bird were a rapier and a scepter. The invitation read, "Hello again, old friend! How time has flown since we last met! Much has transpired in the time we have been apart, and I find myself both greatly endowed with resources and in need of the aid of a group of adventurers both capable and trustworthy. I count you among the most skillful and most worthy sellswords, explorers, and rangers in my acquaintance and therefore I implore you- come to Lannora Ivy, my home, in the Oaksleigh province of Essenmark and be my houseguest for a while. Here you will meet other comrades of mine from my travels, and when we have all assembled I shall propose to you the journey of a lifetime. In faith and friendship, Lord Arthur Swiftwind".
