Dishonest

History

While Arthur was never a particularly overbearing brother, his younger brother Edward grew up feeling inferior to him and resenting him. The two boys were reasonably close when Edward was still small, but over time Edward viewed Arthur as a perfectionist and a know-it-all, and Arthur viewed Edward as a petulant and quarrelsome brat. Neither brother's estimation of the other was entirely correct or entirely incorrect, but the fact remained that the attention and extremely elusive affection of @VictorSwiftwind tended to focus mostly on Arthur and Margaret Swiftwind and, after young Elspeth Swiftwind was born, on Arthur and Elspeth. Over the years the divide between the brothers deepened, and as adults, Arthur lacks sympathy for the troublesome Edward, and Edward sees Arthur as a pompous ass who should have no control over anyone's inheritance but his own.

Nicknames & Petnames

History

When Margaret and Arthur were young children their mother gave birth to a third child, Edward. The boy was a sweet baby and kind (if somewhat mischievous) child and Margaret adored him, ever willing to guide and protect Edward. It was not until Edward's preteen years that he began to act out, angry and bitter toward VictorSwiftwind for being such a distant and occasionally emotionally abusive father. As Edward grew older and wilder, Victor continued to ignore his younger son's emotional needs and Edward continued to resent and lash out at his father until eventually, he had slighted both of his siblings as well as his parents many times over. By the time Edward came of age and left Lannora Ivy, or Swiftwind Manor, he was already developing a bad reputation in polite society as a drunk, a gambler, and a womanizer. While Margaret generally views Edward with a healthy measure of shame, her feelings for him are more complex underneath her stately and somewhat stuffy exterior; Margaret believes that the boy she so loved is still alive beneath all of Edward's avarice and spite, and she leaves a place in her heart open for him despite their various disagreements. Edward loves his siblings but has maintained a stance of angst and wrath for so long that he no longer knows how to show affection to Arthur, Margaret, and Elspeth or how to be vulnerable around them. Margaret and Edward are very alike in that they each love the other, but neither hides their disdain for the other's attitude.

Nicknames & Petnames

Edward sometimes refers to Margaret as "Marge", which she hates; Margaret used to call Edward "Eddie" out of affection when they were children, but as the divide between them grew, Margaret began calling her younger brother by his full first name.

Shared Acquaintances

Margaret and Edward are both well acquainted with the staff of Lannora Ivy as well as several of the usual suspects among Essenmark high society, but Edward is not welcome among most of polite society anymore, so their list of mutual acquaintances has diminished significantly.

Frequently sneering or glaring from the corner of a room, Edward Swiftwind is the younger brother and lifelong rival of Arthur and has made quite a reputation for himself as a womanizer and scoundrel. Edward did not attend Victor's funeral, and openly resents his father's choice to leave the estate solely in the hands of his older brother. Edward gets by on the Swiftwind name alone and is known for burning through his monthly stipend too quickly and having to ask for money from his siblings.
