What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I would like a feature where you can adjust and edit the Character template (and other article templates), hiding unwanted and unneeded sections, renaming others, or even rearrange the sections, either globally or on a per-article basis. (E.g. on a character template, rename 'Species' to 'Vampire Clan' and hide the 'Sex' category if 'Gender' is all that is needed'.) This could be added as a feature in Custom Templates perhaps, if not as a general world setting option for the default templates.   For database purposes, I imagine it wouldn't even need any changes to pre-existing entries, just add additional fields. The 'Age' entry wouldn't just have the 'payload' text field, but also a 'display title' and 'is shown' bool. Surely, that would be feasible?     Alternatively, I would like a variant on the 'generic article' template, which is just an article with a 'freeform' content section, and then a sidebar section with a flexible, easily customizable biography table and portrait. Think of fandom wikis. Something where you can choose 'add field', and then fill in both the title and payload fields with custom content. The Toyhou.se character portfolio website does this pretty well. I'm certain that a feature like this would be beneficial for a community focused on creative writing like this. There is just no way to create prompts and templates that match everyone's setting and writing.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

I myself, for my own world project, have largely avoided specific article types like the character template because it's just too much bloat for my taste.... too overwhelming to find and edit the sections I actually care about. Just making everything as generic articles and adding some custom tables is so much easier.   Now I want to maintain a world with some friends for our TTRPG campaign. However, the Character Template is still very bloated, and actually still missing some sections for the setting we need. (Vampire the Masquerade... a needed option would e.g. be 'Clan', 'Faction' or even just a simple 'Occupation').   I have looked into Custom Templates, but as I have been told, this feature, so far, can only change how an article is presented in the world website, but doesn't actually change anything about the fillable sections in the editor?   Note: I have just learned that, at the very least, you can remove/hide prompts in the new editor. I do prefer the old editor - it just seems more easy to use and navigate. I also don't want to have to disable sections for every article. I would just have some universal character templates with all the same sections that I need specifically for my worldbuilding or note-keeping purposes, without having to hunt down the exact prompts I wish to fill in among a hundred options.

What are other uses for this feature request?

I see a lot of feature requests that ask for a certain thing to be added to a certain template (currently e.g. "Consumables Prompt Suggestions for Item Template" and "Add "Average Wingspan" to the Species Template ").   This feature could cut down on requests like this. It would make it so templates don't have to constantly be managed and adjusted by admins site-wide, but users can make small adjustments to their own templates on an as-needed basis.

Most of what you're asking for is already doable. Add your own headings when prompts don't suffice, and use custom templates to create articles with preconfigured headings. The new (pop-up) editor lets you add only the prompts/sections you want to use. The full-page editor will either be updated to match (hopefully) or removed (hopefully not).   There are even far-future plans to enhance the generic template: https://www.worldanvil.com/community/voting/suggestion/b9c39f6a-0cf4-45a3-b230-698fba8b6cff/view   The only thing we can't do is create our own calculated or bi-directional fields, which would be cool but probably not feasible. It'd be great if templates and prompts were more flexible, but I don't think WA's infrastructure readily supports it.

People keep asking for things like this, and the devs keep declining them because of the immense work and coding required. Maybe try custom templates instead?
