Redirect full text for Timeline Event

redirect history events conflicts-are-complicated what-really-happened

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Many events in history are better served as full articles than just the text box timeline events offer for extended information. Sometimes, this seems very evident — a Military Conflict is reasonably a thing that mattered in history and would therefore likely appear on a timeline. If you want information on the invention of something, that should probably take you to the relevant Technology article.   That events can link to relevant characters, organizations, etc is great — but you might not want a click-through to any one specific of those. Nor is the kind of article you want to link always an option. And you might want the "full text" link for the even to take the person to an article that doesn't automatically link back to the event. There are a lot of different use-cases here.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Today, a Category page can be set to automatically redirect to a specific article. Map Pins can be set to automatically redirect to a specific article. A way for the full text page for an Event to redirect to an article would work in the same way.   Events that should have extensive information that's best displayed using an article would select that article as an override.

What are other uses for this feature request?

The number of uses is the same as the number of things that Events could reference that aren't just "affected things in these categories." This is for all those things in history where there's a need to clarify extensively.

Follow up

An example of how the current set-up is a problem: Imagine a timeline for world conflicts. Reasonably, WW2 would be on there to establish its dates. Equally, WW2 would warrant its own article to go into detail. The event would also connect related nation Organizations. First problem: Linking to the WW2 article would have to be a text-link in the event, not a feature of the event itself. Second problem: Click through to one of the nations involved. The sidebar will helpfully have the historical entry listed to help establish the link. But if you click the link, you're taken to an utterly pointless page that's just a series of links instead of somewhere useful. This is the full text event page and only warranted if the event itself contains all the pertinent information about it. Second-and-a-half problem: The same pointless page exists for any event and can be reached from several places. For example it's the one linked to with BBCode.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! Definitely an interesting though, but we're closing this because we feel that a planned update to historical events will cover this issue.

I would like this as well, or at least the ability to link more than just a generic article to the timelines. thanks for suggesting! God bless

I was just thinking of opening this exact feature request! Redirecting historical entries to articles would be amazing, and would make the entries far more versatile.

I see it working much like how articles and other maps are linked to map markers. Is that kind of what you are going for?
