species original-species former-species

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently you cannot specify a character's original/past species.

Currently if you have a character that is born one species but is turned into another at a later date there is no innate way of showcasing this without adding it manually as a description.

In some cases, this is fine, for example if a vampire started out as a human, you could make a species that descend from both, however, this works substantially less well for transformations. If you are born a human, then transformed into a completely new creature your former species might have become irrelevant, but it is still presumably integral to the character's past and therefore being able to specify a creature's original species in the template itself would be useful for showcasing this.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By adding a field for the creature's original species, you can easily show the reader that this character was formerly part of a completely different species.

What are other uses for this feature request?

It would allow you to easily show what species a deity that ascended from a mortal creature originally belonged to

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! We think this is a very niche field that would unnecessarily bloat the template for most users, therefore it's declined.   However, you can still display this information using custom key/value pairs. This page explains how to create custom sidebar fields: https://www.worldanvil.com/learn/bbcode-tutorials/custom-side-field

it's a little niche, but I like it. I'm writing a story about people playing a game, so I think it would be helpful for me to be able to show what species my characters are playing.

Also works for fairy tale inspired worlds, where characters are frequently transformed into other species, like the Frog Prince, the Lame Fox, the Black Bull of Norway...

"vampire" is a condition, not a species, as are most other supernatural and sci-fi transformations.

I would expand on this by having the abilities to create versions of a character that are all the in the same article but at different stages of their life, not just their species

I can see how this would be particularly useful for undead characters.

This feels like such a specific usecase, I don't think a general field is necessary for this. You can use the --key:value-- bbcode to add this kind of information yourself to the sidebar.
