What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Maps, while feature rich, are missing the reason why maps were created in the first place: To get a feel for where is what.    With that, a distance ruler at the bottom of the screen and a ruler tool to use via the cursor, seem like a natural addition, that is currently missing.   While a distance bar showing a set unit of measurement can be found on many modern and ancient maps alike, a ruler tool to use via cursor can be even more useful.   Your map would be given a unit (named by you) to its resolution, and then you could scale it to the map, and the ruler tool to it accordingly.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Having the option to set a distance ruler at the bottom of the screen (each line being 1km or 1mi or something) would highly increase readability of a map and to offer perspective, even when making city/regional maps.   A ruler tool to use with the cursor would also add a little more functionality to the existing presentation view.

What are other uses for this feature request?

In the long run, in addition to giving readers of your world the ability to put the places on maps into perspective, it could also help authors for calculating travel time (which then could in addition lead to a feature of 12miles/day etcetera)
