BBCode redact redaction article

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

When writing an article, we should have the ability to select a block of text and hit a button to redact it. We currently have the ability to redact text like this ████████ through the [redacted:8] command, with the number being the character length of the desired redaction. However, that just inserts redacted characters rather than blacking out actual text content.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By enabling this functionality, it will allow us to keep all the information relevant to an article within the article itself, rather than needing to split it out into Secrets. For worlds used in conjunction with RPG campaigns, this allows us to remove redaction as the players learn more information about the character, location, etc.

The Team's Response

Closed due to low support   This feature request does not explain who be able to see what when it's revealed. IF you were to do it as described above it would be equivalent to using the "subcontainer" BBcode since you will have to explain to whom something is revealed.   Keep in mind that, if I understanding the above correctly, although highly specialised the above IS perfectly possible by using the current grandmaster functionality like (subgroups BBcode, secrets and CSS)

Already doable with Grandmaster+ guild membership. In addition to using secrets for this you can create containers that are only visible to certain subcriber groups. See: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/WorldAnvilCodex/a/subscriber-containers   The redacted-BBcode should function as it does currently, in my opinion. It's a graphical trick to add flavor to a piece of text, invoking themes of espionage, secrecy and conspiracies. Actual features for how sensitive information is presented in articles to viewers should be entirely different things.

If this redaction was linked to subscriber groups some how that would be awesome! like, showing up as the ██ bar for anyone without access with a short note attached to it, and showing as a "spoiler" (maybe?) for those who do have access?

A voter down below mentioned confusion for this idea, but the idea can be easily explain this way: I've written a paragraph on the dragons of Mt. Kalador. The end of the paragraph mentions that those with "Dragon History" on their character sheet know of a secret back entrance to their lair. Redaction would hide this information except to those who are part of the correct Subscriber group.

This suggestion is confusing. What exactly needs improvement about the redacted feature? It does what it should, it insets redacted characters so that no one veiwing the page can read it, hence how a redaction works even in the real world. It sounds like you just want to take the entire function of the secret feature and use it for redactions, when you can just, ya know, use the secret feature. It's unnecessary work for the developers (and also the users).

If I'm understaind what you're trying to say the function already exits within journeyman tags as comments, https://www.worldanvil.com/w/WorldAnvilCodex/a/guild-bbcode you can leave the content in the article only viewable to you when you edit it and thus available to make viewable whenever you want. If you want to just reveal the information that also exists as a spoiler button, of course you can't control how or when players can reveal spoiler information.

I must admit, this was how I expected the redact to work before I re-read the blurb.

I am really sorry for intervening on this voting process but this makes little sense. it does not explain who be able to see what when it's revealed. IF you were to do it as described above it would be equivalent to using the "subcontainer" BBcode since you will have to explain to whom something is revealed.   I am intervening so future posters can try to counter suggest or refine the above to see if there is actually precedence and desire.
