ability to gift coins to other users

coins social-features gifting gifts community

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

As part of social features, WA coins were introduced. There's not much that can be done with them currently, but it can be difficult for newer and low-guild tier users to get enough coins to even make a feature suggestion (300 coins per suggestion), help shape the future of WA by voting for suggestions, let alone get their work seen on the global feed (500 coins per post).   On the other hand, many long-time and high-guild-tier users are sitting on literal piles of coins that they could never hope to all use in a reasonable way.   So I think it would make sense for users to be able to gift WA coins to each other.   I myself have over 69k coins at the time of making this suggestion, and got the idea while seeing a user on the discord be unable to make a suggestion due to being low on coins.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

It would allow users to help each other out by gifting coins if they have some they don't need.

What are other uses for this feature request?

people could also do giveaways and contests where coins are the prize, for example.

Follow up

Thanks for all your thoughts so far, I understand the concerns as well. But: I think getting too hung up on "non-paying users and newer users cannot be trusted to make good suggestions" isn't a very productive argument, since a Freeman would have to spend almost a year on WA, assuming they never spend a single coin on anything else, just to be able to suggest a feature that will still be up for voting by the rest of the community. I don't think paying money makes someone automatically more knowledgeable or insightful, and having enough coins to MAKE a suggestion still doesn't mean it will automatically get fast-tracked for approval. Equaling spending power with the quality of suggestions is a strange idea to me. Especially since we are essentially paying to get (a reasonable amount of) coins, we should also be able to gift them to others who can't afford to, or can't justify spending such a large amount of coins on one thing. We don't know how many potentially great suggestions we miss out on just because the person who would make them lacks the coins and just ends up dropping the idea. We don't know on how many great worlds we miss out on just because their creator may not be active or just not pushy enough on discord to get their content seen, and cannot just spend 500 coins to make a post on the site's global feed.   But even apart from focusing on suggestions and global posts only, there's still other uses for coins. Right now there aren't many, but one voter also mentioned that giving coins as a token of appreciation is just a nice social gesture that could further the community spirit. Later down the line more ways to spend coins will be added, as is also explained by the page where you can see your coins balance. I do hope gifting coins to other users will at some point be added anyway once more uses for coins get introduced since that would just make sense as a part of the feature, no matter if this suggestion gets accepted or not.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We absolutely agree with you that sitting on a pile of thousands of coins is an issue (or at least, pretty useless when you get to those high numbers). We already have plans for community features that will make more use of coins, but for now we've been prioritizing the core worldbuilding features of the site.   That said, we have decided to decline this suggestion; gifting coins will not be implemented. As Those2Nerds mentioned, a Guild member in the lowest tier (Master) needs less than a week of active World Anvil use to open a new suggestion, and less to vote on already-open suggestions. We think this is enough to get to know World Anvil, and we simply don't have the resources to handle more open suggestion than there are now. This could also become an easy way of "buying" votes for a suggestion, which would completely defeat the purpose of this system.   We also wanted to specifically address something you mentioned in the follow-up that we think is an important distinction. As a Guild member, you pay to get a certain number of Guild perks. The amount of Anvil Coins is related to your Guild level, but it is not something you specifically pay to get.

I am on the fence about this - in general this seems like a good idea, but I feel like the higher coin amounts users get with higher subscription tiers don't neccessarily relate to their competence or knowledge, but rather scale to the amount of support they give WorldAnvil. I in no way mean to discredit the support of Freemen, but the subscription tiers detail that the more you spend, the more involved you get to be in the development process etc.

I think it's worth mentioning, you actually need a guild subscription to even be permitted to vote on suggested features, so (as it stands) gifted coins wouldn't really help non-paying members access those.

I never thought of this, and I can't agree more. It would create bonds with many of us, and that's a good thing....BUT, TBH....I miss Arty so much, I'd vote for anything with the name synonymous to TANKS attached to it. Neener.

I agree with Those2Nerds adn A Rambunctious Devil that you can pretty soon get enough to make a suggestion, and I also think that it is a good idea to learn the platform first before making suggestions.   I'm upvoting this though, because I think giving a tip if you find something you like could be a nice gesture. They have something like that on BoardGameGeek (BGG). They have stuff you can buy for your money as well, and it could be a good idea to get some inspiration from them.

I understand the comments I've read so far. I think that gifting coins could work well, and I'm not as concerned about trolls unless people lots of coins start going around and giving them out indiscriminately. But I'm only giving this a +1 because it would take programming effort. And this sort of thing tends to take more programming effort (and fixing edge cases) then you might expect. And I'd really prefer the programming team focus on features and bug fixes.

The lowest guild membership currently offered can earn coins for a suggestion in a week. That's not an unreasonable amount of time. It's also not unreasonable to prioritize suggestions of paying customers over free users (free users get 1 coin a day - which does allow them to weigh in on others' suggestions if not post their own).   I would love to see more uses for coins though, you're absolutely right we end up with thousands more than we can put to use currently.

I appreciate the kind spirit behind this request, and that's why I'm giving it a token positive vote, because I don't believe it would NECESSARILY have a bad effect.   However, I will agree with A Rambunctious Devil in that there's a reason behind the high coin cost to post a suggestion. I would also venture to suggest the possibility that very new users may not have a thorough grasp of how to use WorldAnvil nor the spirit behind the decisions made. For example, they might mistake a feature for a flaw. This may result in cluttering the Feature Suggestion board. Just a note.

As a grandmaster I get 80 coins per day - that means that within a week in the community you can post a request. Most people do not even know about this board in the first week of being here . This protects the community from no-good trolls. I am highly against this.
