coins social-features gifting gifts community
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
As part of social features, WA coins were introduced. There's not much that can be done with them currently, but it can be difficult for newer and low-guild tier users to get enough coins to even make a feature suggestion (300 coins per suggestion), help shape the future of WA by voting for suggestions, let alone get their work seen on the global feed (500 coins per post).
On the other hand, many long-time and high-guild-tier users are sitting on literal piles of coins that they could never hope to all use in a reasonable way.
So I think it would make sense for users to be able to gift WA coins to each other.
I myself have over 69k coins at the time of making this suggestion, and got the idea while seeing a user on the discord be unable to make a suggestion due to being low on coins.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
It would allow users to help each other out by gifting coins if they have some they don't need.
What are other uses for this feature request?
people could also do giveaways and contests where coins are the prize, for example.
Follow up
Thanks for all your thoughts so far, I understand the concerns as well. But: I think getting too hung up on "non-paying users and newer users cannot be trusted to make good suggestions" isn't a very productive argument, since a Freeman would have to spend almost a year on WA, assuming they never spend a single coin on anything else, just to be able to suggest a feature that will still be up for voting by the rest of the community. I don't think paying money makes someone automatically more knowledgeable or insightful, and having enough coins to MAKE a suggestion still doesn't mean it will automatically get fast-tracked for approval. Equaling spending power with the quality of suggestions is a strange idea to me. Especially since we are essentially paying to get (a reasonable amount of) coins, we should also be able to gift them to others who can't afford to, or can't justify spending such a large amount of coins on one thing. We don't know how many potentially great suggestions we miss out on just because the person who would make them lacks the coins and just ends up dropping the idea. We don't know on how many great worlds we miss out on just because their creator may not be active or just not pushy enough on discord to get their content seen, and cannot just spend 500 coins to make a post on the site's global feed.
But even apart from focusing on suggestions and global posts only, there's still other uses for coins. Right now there aren't many, but one voter also mentioned that giving coins as a token of appreciation is just a nice social gesture that could further the community spirit. Later down the line more ways to spend coins will be added, as is also explained by the page where you can see your coins balance. I do hope gifting coins to other users will at some point be added anyway once more uses for coins get introduced since that would just make sense as a part of the feature, no matter if this suggestion gets accepted or not.
The Team's Response
Thanks for the suggestion! We absolutely agree with you that sitting on a pile of thousands of coins is an issue (or at least, pretty useless when you get to those high numbers). We already have plans for community features that will make more use of coins, but for now we've been prioritizing the core worldbuilding features of the site.
That said, we have decided to decline this suggestion; gifting coins will not be implemented. As Those2Nerds mentioned, a Guild member in the lowest tier (Master) needs less than a week of active World Anvil use to open a new suggestion, and less to vote on already-open suggestions. We think this is enough to get to know World Anvil, and we simply don't have the resources to handle more open suggestion than there are now. This could also become an easy way of "buying" votes for a suggestion, which would completely defeat the purpose of this system.
We also wanted to specifically address something you mentioned in the follow-up that we think is an important distinction. As a Guild member, you pay to get a certain number of Guild perks. The amount of Anvil Coins is related to your Guild level, but it is not something you specifically pay to get.
