Note: The general idea of this was made by User "JpgPngExe" in their suggestion, but I wished to suggest a more exact implementation concept, so I believed it correct to suggest this implementation idea separately.
I would like to suggest a possible system that could work for the implementation of Web Visuals when it comes to the varying connections between characters, from emotional to political or economic. It would be a system with many similarities to diplomatic relations between organizations, but implemented on characters and with more freedom for customization and uses I believe.
For characters, there would be a "Machiavellian" tab(Name Changeable). In this tab you would have a section of all the character's connections directly to other characters, with a button to add new ones. Each individual connection is between only two characters.
When creating a connection, you can choose if it is a plain line, or has an arrow head pointing at one of the two characters, a title can be chosen to display over the line/arrow(text amount limited), and a excerpt that will appear when hovering over a connection, along with being able to link articles to the connection that the user will be taken to if they click the connection.
You can also select if the individual character know of the connection. For example, maybe character A knows their the lost brother of character B, but character B doesn't know. A date can optionally be added to known connections to show when a character learned of a connection, helping adapt to fluid changes of information. Also, not all connection need be as secretive. You can set a connection to "Open" meaning that any characters that share a "Open connection can see all other "Open" connections the pair has. So a chain of friends would know they are all friends, but a random person across the world wouldn't since they aren't connected at all. This is important as when viewing a web, when you select a individual, you only see what that character knows.
A second section below direct connections will show what other connections the character knows of, as well as a button to add connections the character is aware of.
Then there will be a button to provide a widget that will display that characters web, not being able to click on other characters.
Finally, the last component of this system, is "Combined Webs"(Name Changeable). To make these "Combined Webs", you select from all of your characters, or tags for groups like a adventuring party or family line, then a web consisting of the collective knowledge of all characters selected is made. When someone clicks on one of the characters in this mega-web, information that that character doesn't know about is faded, showing the viewer a effective visualization of what the character knows and doesn't know in terms of the selected group of people. Characters that aren't in the selected group but are displayed on the web because a connection involving them is known, will not be clickable, having a alternately colored border.
To jump to a characters article, icon representing a character will have a small button incorporated somewhere connected to it that will take the user to the article.
One extra bit I hadn't thought about, if there is a relatively large chain of "Open" connections, it will automatically stop at a reasonable point, but have a plus/minus button connected to the character it stopped on to expand/collapse it if the user wants.
What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
The inability to effectively display complex connections between characters along with showing what a character is aware of in-universe.
How does this feature request address the current situation?
This feature would address the issue by building off the diplomacy web to effectively visualize these connections, like connecting points on a cork board with yarn. I would have a simple and intuitive user interface, and bring a wide range of potential for the representation of varying world building concepts such as political espionage, party dynamics, or even webs of debt between the party members and traders. The possibilities are enormous.
What are other uses for this feature request?
This feature could also help DMs keep track of what certain characters know in a more centralized area, better helping them formulate interesting interaction in the story as a whole. It could help visualize the complex alliances and relationships between deities. Perhaps through some chance, the friend the rouge made has a friend who has a friend who has a friend whos friends with the king! What luck!
Anyways, hope you like the suggestion, and would love feedback on the idea!
