More Flexible System of Time

Feature Upgrade · World management · Created by Zeer Gales
declined

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

In the overall world settings, you can set your global date using "before year zero" and "after year zero" However, in my world, there isn't one "year zero", there is 4, at the beginning of each era. I would like other possible systems of time. A similar system of this sort of exists in timelines already, but I would like it on the Global scale.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By adding an era system, it will allow more flexibility in dating you world's events, and opens up the system for additional improvements, as it is currently rather bare bones.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Possibly may help with timelines, family trees, and calendar features by making this system more open ended and possibly tied with the other systems through time scaling.

The Team's Response

The system shown above is the fallback system in the case that someone is not using TImelines.   This system is meant to be simple since Timelines are the system meant to be used to do era separation.   Keep in mind that the current major project is Chronos which is a completely new implementation of timelines. Given the fact that my timeline *resets* every age/era this would work perfectly for me.

An additional suggestion: having the option to designate how dates in different eras will be displayed on each article. For example, in family trees, living family members born in the "before year zero" era will display their birth year as a negative number, with no label or context. Formatting it with a dash and empty spot for death year would help, but at least having the option to display 21 BC rather than -21 would be super nice.

I've been hoping for this too. My world has two major ages (with consideration of a third). Each of these ages begins due to a complete re-shaping of the worlds political and social landscapes, and as such serves as a restart, or year zero, of the world.

100% agree with this. when I write up lore I don't write it starting from the beginning and moving along the time line. I typically break up eras using major/world-changing events and fill in the gaps as inspiration strikes. consequently I avoid writing in termination dates for eras, so there's always room to squeeze something in.   This doesn't really jive with the current timeline system on WA unfortunately, so I am 100% onboard with revamping it with an era system.

I strongly agree with this request. This has been something that has bothered me for a very long time as a user of this platform. I hope that this at least gets implemented Project Chronos.

I think most worlds out there are probably using more than one "era" system. So this should definitely be a feature for consideration as I think a very large percentage of the userbase would benefit from it.

It would be awesome for eras to be extended in this way. Currently, it feels like a cipher for the real-life "<year> BCE/CE" format. I think 3+ eras should definitely be supported. I would also like it very much if we could edit how the dates are displayed (e.g. "EraAbbr: <year>" instead of "<year> EraAbbr").

On the roadmap, we have Project Chronos, and I hope this suggestion is given consideration towards helping users set up and start timelines, which do have eras.   I've seen a number of people asking for help with the timelines, but there are some options that counter each other. I am hoping the timelines will be overhauled to be streamlined.
