Thank you all for contributing your thoughts on this suggestion. I will start by saying that this is not something new, we have discussed this in the IS meetings for quite a while and I am happy that others find this feature useful as well.
I can now confim tha this feature wil be added to the roadmap (new roadmap refresh pending) and that it will certainly work for the Parent > Children worlds relationship.
I can also confirm that the opposite Children > Parent referencing will not happen. What will happen will be the ability for owners of children worlds to submit suggestions / additions to the cannon of the parent world, at which point, probably the articles will be moved upwards to the parent world so they are available to all children.
Sibling worlds present the same issue with Children > Parent and will probably will not be possible, unless we set some restrictions. I will be talking in person to people that discussed about this when the development of this feature will be under way.
I'd like to express my support for sibling worlds... I have four very different time periods contained within my world that each exists on their own. However, artifacts from earlier time periods can be a thing within later time periods (or earlier... time is a strange thing).
I'm more interested in “sibling” worlds, but in the context of a multiverse. Say you had a world where there was a pivotal moment in its history that then branched into two alternate realities. It would be especially helpful for the two “sibling” worlds to be able to reference each other, as they would be separate worlds, but still connected by a shared origin. That could fall under a “parent” world or not.
A potential I see is to have a sort of "user world" where the user puts all of their things that either need to be referenced (like cross world variables, as per the other suggestion), or random creations that were written when inspiration struck but don't belong to any particular world/belong to a world that will not be fleshed out.
I can definitely see this as useful for subscribers.
I love and hate this suggestion. I love it as long as it is linked and contained within the authors "universe". However what happens if you have a time chaos event that causes your world to have two timelines now. So creating a 2nd world with all the same reference materials would be nice. Some comments state we already have those features with how the locations has outspace names but that isn't what it think this suggestion is leading to.
I'd rather see "worlds" be renamed "universes" because that's essentially what they are. You can already have "child worlds" in a way. You have to just adjust the hierarchy of thinking a level or two.
This would be great for organizing multiple DnD worlds and other media, like some books/stories, who have their own little world, but also a lot of overlapping content.
quick interworld linking itself would be an amazing thing
Like a few others have said, this would be a great idea for multiple uses.
If done right, this could be used to reduce the amount of Forgotten Realms settings that are forced to repeat the same content. They could all latch onto a major world and then change what they need to make it "THEIR" setting.
I think it'd be cool to have some flexibility about what can link what and how the permissions work out. I imagine Child Worlds could be good for people with instanced or private AUs with substantial original content that might want to reference the parent without being public to everyone who can see the parent.
