Different Default Maps for Chronicles depending on Year/Time

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

In the current state of chronicles, the displayed map only changes when someone clicks on a new event, and then only when a specific location on the map is associated with the event. This makes showing large-scale changes (border changes, new countries, etc.) much more difficult, especially with the zoom-in that occurs when using map markers.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By having maps assocaited with different periods of time in the chronicles, someone progressing through the chronicle could see how the map has changed over time. Perhaps in 550, a large empire split in two. Now all the events after 550 would show the new map by default, without having to link specific locations.

What are other uses for this feature request?

Since maps aren't the only thing used in the chronicles map feature, this could also be used to easily show the most relevant images for a period, without needing to click on specific events.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We're accepting under consideration for the next iteration of Chronicles. A feature like this would take significant time to implement (and we don't know yet how it could be implemented), but we think it would be really cool and it fits the original vision of the feature, so we'll look into it.   In the meantime, you can use the top lane of the timeline to set different maps. For example, if you want to show how a border changed through time, you can use events that span the entirety of each "map era" and link each of these events to a different map. The change won't be automatic as you scroll, but it will display the same information after clicking the event (as an idea, you could highlight by using brighter colors so users are more tempted to click them).
