Add a "Time Period" or "Era" Article Template

timelines article-templates time-periods eras ages writer&039;s-block

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently there is no article template for time periods/eras, which I think would be useful for worldbuilders of any genre. I take a lot of my inspiration for fleshing out certain concepts from the suggested prompts and connections in prebuilt templates, so I feel stumped when trying to flesh out my world's 4 time periods (sidenote: only having two BCE/CE-style eras in the world settings is also a source of frustration). Also, as a less-than-tech-savvy worldbuilder, creating my own templates would be a huge hassle for what is right now only four articles in my world.   Another thing, which I might address in a separate request later, is the fact that the "Related Article" connection in events on timelines only allows you to choose Generic Articles. I should be able to connect the "Twilight War" event in my world's main timeline to its dedicated Military Conflict Article.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Adding an article template for time periods/eras would remove the writer's block I'm experiencing that I'm sure others share.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This could also provide a lot of clarity for new and not-so-tech-savvy writers and help them build more dynamic worlds with more interesting timelines.

Follow up

I'd like to call attention to DMFW's comment/addition to this suggestion:   "I think you can make a good case for this. I'm in the middle of documenting a very long timeline and I'm effectively simulating this with a summary article and a number of separate generic articles for each era. A template for an article with start and end dates, and showing events within"

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We agree that this is a good idea, but we're still not sure what the best form for this is yet, so we're accepting it for investigation.

Yes please. It's true that we can use generic articles for that, but it does have some issues, e.g. being disqualified for competitions or challenges.

Sounds nice, but technically you could just use a generic template

Agreed, my world has 6 major time periods, and I would certainly like some sort of template to work it around.

I think you can make a good case for this. I'm in the middle of documenting a very long timeline and I'm effectively simulating this with a summary article and a number of separate generic articles for each era. A template for an article with start and end dates, and showing events within the era in the sidebar that could also be attached to the era in the timeline would be convenient.
