What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, on the Character article template, there is a feature to add links to Prose articles, so that Prose articles in which characters appear (or perhaps for other reasons) can be linked and then displayed in the article for the character. I think this is a great feature, but I think allowing links to other types besides Prose articles would make the much more useful. It would be really helpful if links to other article types were allowed. Links to Generic articles, Plot articles, Myths/Legends, and perhaps a few others would be useful.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By allowing users to link to other article types besides Prose articles, I think this feature would be much more useful and probably used more often. This came up for me several times in the Spooktober challenge. I wrote some short stories featuring characters for the challenge. I could not link to those stories from the Character template, because the Spooktober challenge required that the generic Article template be used. I know I could duplicate the entire article using the Prose template, but I think expanding the function to allow for additional article types (Plots and Legends/Myths, definitely) would be a useful upgrade anyway.

What are other uses for this feature request?

None

Vague? The team's response is quite disappointing. What I suggested is clear, I think. There's a field on the Character template to add links to related Prose articles. Why is it limited to Prose articles? I suggested opening it up to allow links to other articles types, such as Plot articles, Legends/Myths, and others where one might reasonably expect a character that has been created to appear. Yes, there are other ways to accomplish that, but they are much less convenient and likely require CSS changes to make them look right. I suspect that the WA DB structure is such that it doesn't allow this change to be made easily (but it should, if article entities and relationships are modeled properly), and that is what would slow it down (though I doubt the change would actually impact performance much). This suggestion didn't get a single downvote and got lots of support, so it's a change that many would welcome. I hope the team would reconsider.

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! We're closing this because we found it a bit vague; in order to discuss and accept (or decline) something we need more specific details. Adding relationships between articles is not as straightforward as it sounds, as every single new relationship added slows down the article.   In any case, you can always use the
KEY
VALUE-- tags in your sidebar. For example, the following code: --Related myth::Link here
will mimic the style of the default article relation fields if you add it to an article's sidebar.
