Separate Books into Parts/Sets of Chapters

New Feature Addition · Manuscripts · Created by BigMinionD

I have noticed that the folders are usually used to separate the manuscripts into chapters. However, there's nothing that can separate manuscripts into parts, or sets of chapters

That is why I would like to implement this feature into World Anvil. I believe being able to separate manuscripts into sets of chapters would be incredibly useful for stories that are usually separated into parts, or informational manuscripts that are also separated into parts.

The Team's Response

Hello Writer beans!   Nothing is stopping you from nesting folders as much as you want to match your way of writing.   What this system is about, and it will not change in the near future is how the PRESENTATION system interprets them in order to display them to the public in World Anvil's manuscripts catalogue.   The above proposal can complicate a lot the display system and make it unwieldy for the readership.

To respond to DMFW's comment: nesting folders in manuscripts are not very intuitive or flexible when publishing chapters.   As far as I can tell, only the top level 'folders' are treated as chapters. When viewing a manuscript it will only list those folders. When viewing those folders only the text included directly in those top level folders ( not the subfolders) is rendered, so for a story to be readable you cannot use subfolders in the readable parts, only for keeping notes/research.   I'm working on a story that is meant to be posted as a webnovel with 60+ chapters each containing multiple scenes and starting to have usability problems scrolling through the entire list to jump between them. This feature would be very helpful!

I see the need for this but is it not achievable already, just by creating and nesting folders? There is nothing to stop you making top level folders for the major parts of the story and then creating chaper folders inside them. You can drag folders to change their nesting level just like text. Apologies if I've missed some reason why this isn't satisfactory.

Yes please! I know updating/improving the manuscripts section is on the agenda (Project Homer, I think it was?) and this is one feature that would be really nice to have.   As a workaround, I've had a pseudo-chapter that simply said "Part 1" and nothing else. It doesn't actually group the parts but it does let the reader know where each part begins and ends.
