There is a lot of in progress and accepted suggestions, why don't we let them catch up before suggesting more?

The Team's Response

Hello there everyone!   I think that as a community you answered better than I could ever on this one. I would also like to remind you that,
  • We just got a core second developer 20 days ago (for a total of 2 people to support me)
  • We are hiring another as we speak.
  • Having said that, the Roadmap should be considered a fluid document, in fact we are days away from the announcement of the annual survey which can, and probably will change some of the priorities!   <3

Issues are handled in a priority decided by the team, stopping suggestions actually makes them focus on stuff that might be less important then issues that would be added here otherwise.

I feel if the team couldn't handle the backlog (which is admittedly enormous) they would put a hold on new suggestions themselves. Twaren Stormborn and Hanhula below have the right of it.

The idea is sound on its face. However think of this as a living breathing multiverse, and not as a computer program for a minute. We kinda got to trust Dimi and team to know their large beast best and be able to sort through the admittedly large amounts of feedback and identify the particular points that it is expedient to address at all, and when best to address them. At the end of the day it is his baby, he's picked his team, and we are merely living in his multiverse. We are 'citizens' of World Anvil in our own unique way and our feedback matters. But unless Dimi were to come out and say 'Hey guys can you give me like a three week pause on suggestions' and apply a lock or closure himself? I would think it could be detrimental for all the reasons others have listed to just....do it ourselves. It is well intentioned, but that sort of thing, I would humbly suggest as an alternative, everyone maybe calm down on just spamming a suggestion, and take the time to do the legwork, see if there has been someone to throw it out already (I see so many overlapping ideas on here all the time, sometimes literally two people asking for the exact same thing) and if someone beat you to the punch, VOTE for that instead of suggesting the exact same thing. The system is here for us to utilize, so utilize it fully. Put in the legwork first, insuring whatever you've thought up or noticed isn't already a currently active and ongoing vote. And if it is, instead of suggesting it again, vote for it instead.

Well intended, but the backlog is already massive. Many of these requests overlap, which gives Dimi multiple points of data to look over and consolidate to best improve features.   As Hanhula pointed out, we have to trust the process. If there are too many coming in, Dimi will find the necessary ways to throttle or moderate the process.

Know what this leads to? Someone suggests changes to an article template, it's accepted, and this feature is paused temporarily. Dimi/whoever makes those changes. The suggestions reopen, and someone suggests another feature for the same article template. Could've been done at the same time as before, now it won't be.   I'd generally trust in the WA team's ability to handle their workload!

I don't believe older suggestions should automatically take precedence over more popular/more important/super easy to accomplish etc. suggestions.

I can understand where you're coming from, and I'm super eager for new features too - but from what I've seen from being here since the beginning is that suggestions often spark important ideas and disucssions in the development team on projects that they're actively working on :D   Sure we may see in the roadmap that a certain feature is coming, but if we collectively as a community let it be known what we want / don't want then it can be considered from the initial drawing board (rather than having to come back to it).

Provided everyone remembers that Dimitris has to consider all the implications of a change, including how they may relate to other ongoing developments and whether they fit with the teams overall vision for the site even before factoring in the specifics of how best to make a change and how complex it is, then it's Ok to keep suggesting, just not to be impatient if a change isn't made quickly or at all. As a dev myself (in a totally different area) I understand this and I hope and believe the community does too. So that said, I like this way of interacting with the project.

I trust Dimitris and the team to take time off if needed and so far the board has been both blessing and curse. But I too thought that some things get changed to often or some suggestions are cancelling each other out ...   Maybe we need something like a stop > clearing everything > rework the suggestions-process (a few suggestions had been made and I am sure the team has some as well, for example a time period that has to pass before the same feature gets touched again.) > start again.

I personally think it's going okay, its an open board for a reason and some of the suggestions tie into one another, which can make for easier inputting rather than doing similar updates. There seems to be 3-4 suggestions a day, and I rather like seeing the suggestions people come up with. It really depends on how the devs feel about the suggestions however!
