What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Most links on World Anvil have an easy way to add a tooltip or preview without having to resort to the tooltip BBCode or variables. It would be useful if this was the case for historical events as well.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

The excerpt could be used for the tooltip of the historical event links. This would allow readers to get an understanding of what is behind this link. Additionally the short description could be used to fill in an advanced, BBCode-enabled event preview on links. This should be toggled in the world description like article previews.
