Spellchecking

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Now I know this question has been asked before, and I understand that you have no intention of creating a full spellchecking tool, but for some reason the google spellcheck only works on title, not in article editing text boxes which is where we need it. Is there no way to make it so it works there as it's making the creation of articles a lot more work than it needs to be.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Using the spellchecks built into browsers saves you having to create one but still allows us, the users, to have one when writing articles.

What are other uses for this feature request?

  None.

Follow up

But Firefox and Google chrome have built in spell checks which work in some text windows in world anvil (I think the journals?), but not in any others. Is there no way to enable those?

The Team's Response

Thanks for the suggestion! While we understand where you're coming from, we don't have the resources to develop a spellchecker system that would account for the huge diversity of languages that people use to write on World Anvil. You can, however, use your browser's built-in spellchecker (or install a spellchecking browser extension). If you use Euclid (the advanced BBCode editor), you need to click the "Spellcheck" button in the toolbar above the text box; we know this is a bit clunky and plan to improve this area in the future.

With the amount of fictional words and names, a World Anvil spellcheck should include a personal dictionary like some phones have. It'd let you save specific words and names so they never get marked as misspelled again.

I consider the actual "spellcheck" button to be enough. I don't use only WA so it really doesn't matter much to me.

Just enabling Firefox's spellcheck would be GREAT.

The spellcheck function right now is a little clumsy, as it requires you to hit a button "spell check", then hunt through the article for the red underlines. Easy to miss one. Spellcheck as I type is ideal like in Word documents.

Would love not to have to rely on Grammarly!

Would be a nice add-in if the devs have time. However, there are lots of different people using World Anvil from different places, many not using English or using variations of English (eg. British/Australian English vs American English). I feel like users choosing a browser-based checker for their own preferences and language is a better option currently ^_^

If they added a spellcheck option for different languages, it would be superb!

Like mentioned before: It depends on the editor you are using. Euclid has the spellcheck button, the legacy editor works fine with normal in-browser spellcheck and with Plato you can check the source code with any spellchecker.

This would be an excellent feature! Another great thing with the spellchecks built into browsers is that it includes other languages than English (I write in French and thus don't need to see my entire article underlined in red because it isn't written in English...)

Perhaps I don't get what's being proposed here, but spell checking works just fine for me in the article text boxes. It depends on which editor you are using - only one of the editors has the spell checking functionality, but you can switch back and forth between the editors by clicking the "Spellcheck" at the top or bottom of the editor window.

This would honestly be a lifesaver. I often make typos and then read over my article a month later and find 10 misspelt words which is not fun to deal with.

I don't know exactly what's coming up in future changes with the text editors but I believe there is work being done there. If it also includes some method of spell checking I'm sure I'd find that helpful, and if that meant leveraging browser capabilities to not reinvent the wheel, that would be fine with me.
