For those working in private worlds, it can be really frustrating to be unable to track personal progress and participate in events like NaNoWriMo, Summer Camp, and World Ember. 

   

Can we please have a way to submit our progress even if we do not qualify for prizes, but still be able to participate in some capacity?

The Team's Response

First of all this is kind of irrelevant for NaNo :) We are not checking wordcount for it on the website. you can do as you please :) In most cases it's the NaNo stats that are shown by winners and even that can be faked, that is on you and your relationship with the community and yourself :)   Regarding WE there are a lot of reasons that this should not happen.
  • You do not need a competitions world. You can set temporarily your world as public, your private articles will remain private and the ones created will count and display
  • It is wholly unfair to the rest of the community, not only private articles cannot be checked but this is a public competition that aims on inspiring each other.
  • It demotes significantly the value of the badge, "At least the badge" badge mentality means that if the badge can be cheated then its value is minimized or utterly lost since I can simply create a single lorem ipsum article of 10k words and get the badge. We have people who done it PUBLICALLY , and we were able to vet them out, imagine what will happen if it was private.
  • Your dashboard has stats :) You can very easily check where have you been in the beginning of the month and where you are now :)

      At the very least, the tools to track word count (if they are not already implemented within a private world) and a badge of honor for completion. Nanowrimo isn't a competition. It's a challenge and the World Ember seems more like a competition against others rather than against oneself. Something to note the accomplishment and completion to World Ember or Summer Camp in the same spirit doesn't seem like an unfair request.

      I mean, NaNoWriMo is not run by the site, so that would be irrelevant, but I think it has to do with word count checking and trying to prevent cheating. It would be nice to not have to rely on a challenge world and leave my articles up on there for months.

      I can understand not being eligible for any prizes, but at least the participation numbers would be nice. This has been a long-term wish of mine.
