What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?
The BC/AD function in World Configuration doesn't allow for multiple "BC" Eras in which a world might have several Eras before "Year 0" which would be relevant for date calculations (ex: for character ages or such things). You can set up multiple BC Eras in the Timeline but not in World Configuration, which makes it frustrating because the functionality is clearly there, but not all of the areas in which it would be helpful.
Alternatively, allow for users to select an Era in the date section of article creations, rather than inputting a numerical year for calculations. Whichever is simpler. Examples of how this could work:
Option 1: World Date & Time Configuration Option Change:
Anything in [Brackets] indicates a Textbox. {Curly Brackets} indicates a option bubble or checkbox selection type.
Instead of Global Year Before/After Year 0, instead it could be:
Configure Current Global Era:
[Name] - [Start Year - End Year (if applicable)] [Current Year*] [Era Abbreviation]
Options: Is this the Current Era of Your World? {Yes} {No}
Then:
Does your World have Previous Eras? {Yes} {No}
If Yes:
Select number of Previous Eras to Configure: (Dropdown - Select #)
Once a number is selected, the page will load that amount of extra Era configuration boxes including the options:
Configure Era:
[Era Name] [Start Year] [End Year] [Era Abbreviation] [Checkboxes: {Prior to Current Era} {After Current Era}]
Depending on the selection, the Era will be automatically sorted in relation to the previously configured Current Global Era. It would also be cool if we could have an [Export] option to export the Era settings directly into a Master Timeline, if we wanted to, so that way we wouldn't have to set all the years up again. It might also be best if the Years in this section were handled as UTD rather than Era-Years.
Alternative: In-Article Era Dropdowns
Currently, for example on a character article, Dates of Birth and Death are only calculated based on the setting of Year 0, which only allows for the Current Era and the Era directly previous (the "BC" Era) to be used for calculations. Instead of that, perhaps you could add in some kind of options to allow for easier configurations, like so:
Year of Birth/Death/Creation/Founding or Whatever Else:
{Standard Calculation} {UTD Calculation}
The Standard Calculation would be the same as it currently functions, with only allowing Current/Previous Era, allowing those with simpler timelines to not need to bother with using the more advanced functionality at all if they don't want to. UTD Calculation would instead use the UTD Years, which would allow for those with more complicated Eras/Timelines to correctly calculate ages for things from prior Eras.
Additional Field(optional): (Next to Year of Birth/Death)
Era:
Tooltip: Select an Era from your Master Timeline/World Configuration If using Standard Calculation mode, the duration of Eras present in Configuration/Master Timeline will be used to calculate ages. Setting up your Master Timeline using UTD will increase the accuracy of these calculations.
>>> (Timeline or Config must be set up previously for options to appear, just like with other article links).
How does this feature request address the current situation?
A simple update to the Configuration of Date & Time to allow for multiple "pre-Year 0" Eras would allow for greater configurability when putting in dates of creation/birth/death etc if you want the automatic calculations to work properly with proper date labeling, rather than having to use the built-in override in the article template to insert the durations manually.
In the current state, if you want to label say a character as being born in a previous Era, you only have the option to enter a "negative year", which will then calculate the age of the character based on counting backwards from zero, but only if that character is born in the era indicated as "BC" in the World Configuration menu. There's no way to set a character's date of birth/death into a specific Era.
I am personally rather anal, which explains why I'm here (lol), so having most characters/events with the automatic calculation format on the articles, but then a few of which that have to be overridden because the functionality isn't there to run the autocalculations kind of bothers me.
