Bulk Change Article References

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

If for some reason an existing article does not suffice, and a new one is created, the old article's references cannot be ported easily. While the reference list helps to find where it is referenced, a deal of work is involved in manually changing. One has to scour each reference article, find each reference, and then change them by hand.   The more references, the more time spent scouring and changing, and also ensuring no weird edit mistakes happen.   It can quickly become cumbersome, especially if large-scale article changes are on the docket. If one has, for example, 10 different articles they want to change, [10 times X references] will end up being the workload involved. Factoring in all the clicks, tab navigations, etc, there's a fair bit involved at each step.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

By being able to bulk change all of an articles' references toward another article, the workload is reduced to a few simple inputs. I could say "this article, that has 20 references, now all of them point toward this other article". I don't have to spend time navigating 20 different articles, finding the references and changing them by hand.

What are other uses for this feature request?

In general, any reason someone would have to move references from one article to another has value for this feature. Whether it's closing out an article for something, or translating old content to new articles like me, references are something that need changing. Being able to bulk change them would cut out a lot of manual work involved.   Thank you for reading.

The Team's Response

This is a good suggestion but it gathered very little support. I would very happy to work on it - but it will need a bit more love from the community next time.

I fully support this suggestion as I've had to go through this myself. Simple FROM and TO text fields would be all it takes for the user experience.

I just created a new template and wanted to port my existing articles from the parent template to the child and had this exact problem - I had to manually go through and fix every reference to each of the articles I was deprecating. This would speed things up immensely! Perhaps a button under the "Referenced in" that said "redirect references" and allowed you to specify a new page to replace would work?

If you want to redirect all existing mentions, I would suggest you use variables to make your @references indirect. For prompt-answers, I imagine it's far more difficult to implement a replacement-command, especially since those are based on article-type.

This might be very difficult, if not impossible, to administer. But I would find it extremely useful as I've had to delete and recreate some articles in the past that have contained multiple references.

I really don't see how this would be possible, but it would be useful.
