What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

I would love if the term "Expanse" was added to the list of geographical location types. This term, while not common, is used by sci-fi settings and some fantasy settings often enough to be worth adding.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

Adding a single new term for a geographical location type isn't too much hassle nor does it overlap with any pre-existing terms. So it fixes it pretty succinctly

Examples

Dictionary Description
an area of something, typically land or sea, presenting a wide continuous surface.
Used as a location
The explorer gazed across the vast Arctic expanse.

Another
an uninterrupted space or area; a wide extent of anything: an expanse of water. something that is spread out, especially over a relatively large area: that great expanse, the sky.

Isn't "expanse" more of a poetic description than a name of a geographical feature?

Expanse can refer to a wide variety of terrain types. "expanse" is a modifier to a specific terrain type, not a terrain type in and of itself.

It is most definitely a noun and would also be a cool and versatile addition to geographical location types.

Unless I’m looking in the wrong dictionary, expanse is a noun and expansive is an adjective. So adding this seems perfectly reasonable.

Expanse may be an adjective in common real-world English, BUT languages, including English, evolve - therefor, 'expanse' may not remain an adjective forever. There's no reason it cannot evolve to also become a noun in its own right, and in the suggested sense, it makes sense as a noun.   Of course, if people really want to be pedantic, no doubt a noun-specific synonym for 'expanse' can be found and used to mean the same thing. Still a useful addition.

Even when it's true, that is an adjective. it seems to be used for something that would benefit a sci-fi and other elements. So yeah. I can see it.

The word expanse is an adjective. People miss-use it to mean something like a desert, or waste, it really is not. You can have a forest expanse. Just name it the "Mojave Desert Expanse."

It's a nice poetic term and why not? Of course there is nothing to stop you naming your region as "The something expanse" already if you like the word.
