Email Notifications

New Feature Addition · Generic · Created by Peter Davis
declined

I know that both myself and my Alpha/Beta Readers would like to be able to get email notifications whenever our account receives a notification. It would save my readers having to log in all the time to see if something is new, or me sending emails out all the time to tell them that something is new.

The Team's Response

I am sorry but I will not be implementing this. There is an API and we can also create our own webhook so information are sent somewhere that, that somewhere can send emails if you wish but I do not want to risk WA having issues with email service providers.

Some people get hundreds of notifications every day. It isn't a good idea

While emails are great for notifications, I feel like setting up a Discord and ping directly there would actually be more useful, but that's just me.   Like others, I'm more worried about WA emails getting spammed.

Even as an opt-in, this risks WA getting flagged as spam. The idea is to cultivate use on the site itself. Using third party sites to let readers know about updates, or moving more of your communication to WA itself would be a better solution.

Agree with the comments about spam. Should probably be an opt-in option, not standard. But it could be a nice feature :)

Discord streams and I thiink also RSS feeds cover most of this. It'd be nice and convenient, but also risks spam... I dunno. I'll throw a +10, but it's an uncertain +10.

I'd like to see this, but it should be a separate button to push notifications to e-mail. I generate a lot of articles in rapid succession and don't want to flood my readers' e-mail boxes unnecessarily - I'd use it for big announcements/challenge articles pretty much exclusively.

This risks WA getting thrown into spam-lists, which would have severe impact on their business. You might want to set up a Discord and use Discord notifications instead.

I originally thought this was how it worked, and my D&D group members & I were very surprised when I was pushing notifications of updated world content they needed to know before the next game, and none of them were getting them. We eventually figured out it was only going to the notifications pane, which was disappointing as my players only come here for the world content & I don't update daily.   The only problem with emailing notifications is the email limits Microsoft imposed on mail servers a few months ago, which dramatically slowed sending emails to mailing lists if you're on a Microsoft server. If there is a better alternative, I'd love to hear about it.

I see opportunities for abuse here, but if you limited to paying members it might work.
