Notes Planning AgileWorldBuilding
Notes within World Anvil currently follow a traditional notepad style. However, many modern writing techniques and creativity promotes agility & free-flowing ideas- Jumping from one aspect to another!. Therefore let's have a tool that allows our notes and concept or inspiration planning to be free-flowing too!   To enable a more dynamic creative process and promote the unique selling point (USP) for WA to store all your world-building aspects in one location.   I'd like to see WA improve the service offering surrounding the inspirational stages of novel and story construction.   Therefore I would like to suggest a new feature to add to as an alternative to the traditional notes option, note pin/poster boards. - The ability to create multiple boards add images, text and formating - Able to drag notes around and re-organise them at will. - A UI interface similar to milanote.com/product/moodboarding, - Ability to create spider diagrams of pin items and annotate with arrow and other basic shapes - Ability to add headers to drop storyboards into, i.e. Beginning, Middle, End or Chapter 1, Chapter 2 etc. Through developing this functionality, the WA community will have a complete tool kit that integrates all aspects of the creative process. World meta (Foundations), Writing software (manuscripts), Articles to publish your work, plus CSS to make it look however you want! And finial the tool which makes all the other possible a creative dynamic storyboard workspace to paste ideas in and move them around in tabs.

What functionality is missing? What is unsatisfying with the current situation?

Currently, WA has a limited initial concept/inspiration planning toolkit. Which doesn't allow for Agile worldbuilding or dynamic create planning.   Therefore, by adding storyboard notes, the WA community would have an end-to-end service proposition, making WA the one-stop-shop for all creative writing needs.

How does this feature request address the current situation?

This feature will add a new functionaility vital to the end-t-end service of WA. Adding functionaility to develop a dynamic working space for stage zero of the story/novel writting process perfect for RPG masters and Novelists.

What are other uses for this feature request?

This feature would:
  • Develop on the USP of WA - All your World building in one place.
  • Support the creative process.
  • Create a space which follows the latest trends.
  • Create a tool which allows you to make a digital pin/mood board for your idea's.
  • Increase the service margins and user base.
  • increase the service delivery qulaity.
  • Tackle a gap in the creative process for authors.
  • Summary: World Anvil Notes - Similar to Miller note organise notes and thoughts into visual boards, with poster board functionality.

    Follow up

Thank you, Dimi. I might try to reword, but something to help with mind mapping to connect ideas might be helpful and give an even more comprehensive toolbox increasing the market Size for WA.

    The Team's Response

Advertising lingo and pitch aside, there are some good ideas here -maybe not everything but some good stuff.   The community doesn't seem to be behind it all that much but it's something we can certainly entertain with an internal discussion.

This kind of feature would be awesome. There are websites that do this already of course, but like you said, it would be so nice to have all of my worlbuilding tools in one place. I already use WA for keeping track of all my characters, geography, magic, etc as well as my writing of the actual book with manuscripts. So it would be really nice to have this kind of UI for notes as well.

I agree with several of the comments below. I actually use a third-party system to manage all my notes, only occasionally returning to WA for my worldbuilding to take advantage of its prompts, for the sole purpose that the notes management and article recall systems are clunky, even when using the Storyteller's Screen.

This sounds great. Definitely a big task to develop an entirely new feature. But I would definitely use this. I already use 3rd party software for making and visually organizing worldbuilding notes as well as my worldbuilding workflow, e.g. Trello. Focusing everything into one place (WA) would be great for me. And of course there would be the benefit of being easily able to link notes to articles, worlds, characters, plots etc.   I'm sure this would be very helpful for worlds that have an entire team of worldbuilders and content creators working on them.

Useful not for all, but adding it will only benefit the service. My only worry would be overwhelming new users with too many options, so perhaps making it opt-in within settings could be beneficial.

First of all, a big thanks for bringing this up! I would love this feature. Before I discovered WorldAnvil, I used to make notes on Padlet linking them with arrows and other things. Although, I can now organise my ideas easier, the notemaking feature is still unrivalled in Padlet and other similar software. I use both WA and padlet now, but it would really be good if that kind of notemaking got integrated so that I would have everything in one place. I would really love to have such feature integrated into WorldAnvil even if it takes time (I understand that this feature would be a humongous development so this kind of feature would definitely take time).

As it was mentioned before this is a whole *ss product (e.g.: the site you linked), but if there's no deadline or expectation for it it's certainly something that could be worked on - on slower days.
