Work on an article revision before publishing changes

When editing published articles, I'd love to be able to start editing, have those edits saved as a Revision but not yet published, because I might change some things, but not be finished with the edits in one sitting. The way things are currently, those partial edits need to be published. It would also make reverting to a previous state possible in case of a mistake.

The Team's Response

Thanks for your suggestion! Unfortunately, this would require a form of version control, which is very hard and involved to implement. As a workaround, you can put the new text in a subcontainer while you work on it, effectively creating a section that's only visible to you, and remove the subcontainer when you're done. Take a look at the guide to subscriber containers for more information.

Agreeing with others that version control might be beyond WA's current scope, but it would be a wonderful feature. Even just having a "staging" area for in-progress revisions.

Presumably this would probably be a massive change to how the current article system works, but the idea of Draft and Published versions of a page is certainly intriguing.

I like the idea, but appreciate the concerns on system load etc… as a fallback approach, could there be a way to copy an existing article as a new draft article using same template etc.…Future enhancement could be option to replace the old article with the draft once done… it’s not a version control thing, but may work at least in part?

I like the idea! Perhaps to prevent a heavy load it could be a membership feature? Just throwing out more ideas :)

It would also be nice to have a changelog and previous revisions, similar to wiki editing, though server load is definitely a concern like others have already pointed out

I agree with Pete Nelson here. Seems like it'd be lovely, but might be a heavy load on the system?

It looks to me that this is a form of versioning of articles, and although it no doubt would be a cool and useful feature, it's much, much harder to implement than it first appears (having been an software/systems architect that designed technical authoring systems for a large aerospace company, I know a fair amount about this topic).
