I am currently writing character articles but I believe this function could benefit all articles. The characters that I am currently working on are extremely important to the story and their action have huge ramifications on the plot. I would like to make them public but the problem is that I spoil most of my plot points in those articles. I was discussing with people how to write articles in the context of a story without spoiling it and the people I was talking to told me that they put a spoiler disclaimer either on the main page or on specific articles. That got me thinking that instead of doing that, I could instead write two versions of the same article, one spoiler and one spoiler-free. Then all I would have to do is to link the spoiler article to the non-spoiler one.
But although I know that result can be achieved with the mention system or even by parenting an article to another, I believe that a dedicated "Spoiler" or at least "Alternative article" linker (by linker I mean the dropdown categories such as "Ethnicity" or "Current Location", I do not know how they are officially called) would be of a small but great addition to World Anvil. I imagined it would be located under the Generic tab and in view mode would be on the sidebar.
I would also suggest a similar linker which would be that of "Alternative identities" in the social tab for superheroes or spies with multiple different personas.
Of course, this is a minor request that can be achieved, as a said, in other ways but I really believe that I could encourage people who wish to write fully descriptive articles but who are worried about giving away the meat of their story. It would be especially helpful for people who can't private their article because they have a free account or people who want to make their spoiler article public but who also want a smaller, less revealing option for potential readers.

on 2021-10-03 07:18This would be pretty amazing for my current project. Especcially if you had an easy way to access the linked articles in the backend of WA, too. So if I change one, I can quickly adapt the others, even if they are in a different category ... And I agree, that this would be really great for e.g. different language versions, spoiler-free articles or different viewpoints.

on 2021-09-24 17:34This is literally what secrets were designed for. Using subscriber containers you can even make the text-flow seamless depending on who's reading it. The only thing this doesn't help with are side-bar sections that are auto-generated. I.e. if your character's organisational affiliation is Evil Overlords, you'll have to create that manually in the sidebar in order to handle it rather than rely on the prompts.

Hypothetically speaking ;) if I have a character, who interacts with the main character as a friend, and hides their identity when they interact as an enemy, and then it's revealed that they were one and the same person... I could write the "enemy" article with all the info, without worrying of spoiling the big reveal. And yes, the spoiler tag would do that, but it would be much simpler, and I believe less tempting for readers, to have spoiler info in a seperate article. I could even earmark it as an "Open only after finishing the story" kind of thing.

on 2021-09-23 13:37One of my characters interacts with a younger version of themself and they both have distinct personalities, so it doesn't make sense to characterize them as the same person, but they have the same family members. It's just very confusing.

The option to link alternative articles could also be useful for making SFW variants of NSFW articles, without forcing writers to pick between leaving out (potentially NSFW) content from an article, or making a (potentially critical) article only accessible to a limited number of readers.
